I Live In the Usa

I may not agree with everything our military does - not by a long shot - but you've got to respect a group of people who knowingly risk their lives and dive headfirst into horror that leaves marks deep enough to linger for a lifetime, all for the sake of other people. They selflessly fight and suffer and sometimes die for something bigger than themselves. Happy veteran's day, soldiers.

I know from experience that just like any other job, there are good people and bad people in the military. But by and large, anything and everything they do is because they are ordered to do it. So, if you disagree with the things they do, please keep that in mind when election time comes around. Because ultimately, the actions of the military are dictated by the politicians we elect.

Agreed - when I talked about not agreeing with a lot of what our military does, I was talking mostly about the people giving the orders that get passed down the chain.

They do it because its what they are ordered to do. They joined because they LOVE this country and will die defending if need be. Every thing our military is ordered to do comes from the top brass in Washington.. THOSE are the idiots we need to watch and worry about...

Yup, the higher up the totem pole you go, the more slime you find - it's as true in the military as it is anywhere. The people who love power tend to get it, and also tend to not be such stellar people.

They volunteer to defend their country - brave and honourable behaviour - then get spent like loose dimes on expanding the American Empire.

I don't see it quite as doom and gloom as that, but I do agree that the people in charge are way too quick to spend our soldier's lives in situations where there are alternatives. If there's ever a draft, and THEIR kids are suddenly eligible to be drafted, then all of a sudden they'll change their tune - it won't be some distant conflict anymore, the violence and the horror and the fear of losing loved ones will become real to them.

Well not being american (and being a historian) I probably take a dimmer view of it: and you're absolutely right, if they ever introduced a draft that didnt let all the elite's kids get excluded, then wars would suddenly become serious and scarce.
