@ididntknow schools is a classic example of the labour fog and misinformation. So adding VAT to the public school fees was intended per the pre general election statements to raise money for more teachers in the public sector.

But as Badenoch pointed out there are fewer teachers in the public sector than when the Tories left office per the Education Department's own website.

Numerous private schools at the bottom end on pupil fees have gone out of business putting their pupils into the public sector and their parents were paying towards education generally through their taxes and again directly to their now defunct schools.

My own county council is now having to pay taxi fares to bus some of those displaced private sector pupils from the north of the county to the south of the county some 50 miles to find local authority school places out of its funds not central government's.

But on top of that Starmer has now told us that the VAT revenue received through those private school fees is paying for accommodation for the boat arrivals!

@ididntknow That "referendum" was held after the Russian invadion wigh many thousands having fled of been expelled. In such circumstances a democratic vote was impossonle. Add in Russian troops intimidating voters and voting themselves and it was utterly disgraceful that so many countries accepted the result.
gandalf1957 · 61-69, M
The "smash the gangs" re: the boat arrivals really annoys me. I guess many people though that a lawyer and former DPP to boot would be showcasing what could be done with the smash the gangs comment and maybe voted for Labour on that basis. It was just another soundbite to get support for Starmer becoming prime minister just like the cynical posing with the WASPI women, any way to get another voter. Smashing the gangs under British law just not possible in most cases, the gangs don't operate out of Britain generally. The only prosecution that I am aware of is ironically someone arrested whilst Rishi Sunak was prime minister.

One thing to remember when Starmer accuses the Tories as he readily does of never learning is that Labour have failed to recognise that their total vote in 2024 was approximately 500,000 fewer that in 2019 so droves didn't vote for change and large parliamentary majorities on individual wafer thin parliamentary seat majorities can soon disappear as the Tories found in 2024 and as I predict Labour will find come the General Election and clearly Labour have not learned that.

I would never vote Labour, nor did I vote for Conservatives led by Boris Johnson

So, I didn't vote Labour in 2024 and I didn't vote Conservative in 2019, I voted in both General Elections, differently each time.

@ididntknow And? You are still talking about the EU. I'm talking about the ECHR. Separate entities, but anything with the word "European" in it seem to send some people into an apoplexy.

@ididntknow Good. We are on the way to an understanding. The Council of Europe and the ECHR are separate entities to the EU. Strasbourg is a common feature. But them so is London for many international institutions that are not connected legally.

@jefferson

I did clearly state in my previous post "Numerous private schools at the bottom end on pupil fees ......" maybe you didn't read that phrase?

It's not the millionaires whose childrens' private schools are closing it is everyday working people who chose to pay to send their children for whatever reason to a private school (and maybe foregoing other things such as holidays to do so) possibly because at the local schools in the area in which they live children are not performing well, or maybe the child is musically talented which is not studied in depth by the state school, or has special needs and in so doing those parents are actually effectively subsidising others as they themselves have no rebate on their taxes for not using state schools.

If those parents were millionaires the VAT on private schools wouldn't affect them the extra charge would be a "mere drop in the ocean", "chicken feed", whichever phrase you prefer.

The millionaires can still afford to send their children to the upper echelon private schools, the likes of Eton, Harrow, Rugby, Winchester, Westminster. Roedean. Millfield etc. - but I'm referring to the lower end private schools, especially the private day schools (not all private schools are boarding schools) the ones that are going bankrupt and closing and from where the pupils (whose parents are not millionaires and can't afford the fee scales of the next tier of private schools) are now entering a state sector that in some counties have few if any state school places for them. Hence the reason the councils are paying taxi fares in some cases to take those children miles to a state school that has spaces.

@jefferson Has Starmer fixed anything?

For example Resident doctors still on strike but paid 30% more than before, fewer teachers than before the General election, higher overall taxation than before the General election, more illegal boat arrivals than before the general election, yes fewer hotels used to house them but more housed in the hotels left.

With regard to the resident doctors their pay rises has eroded the differentials between them and the consultants and increased the differentials between them and the nurses and backroom staff on the Agenda for Change pay scales. Look out for further industrial action in the NHS from all the other employees who have all the same arguments on their pay being squeezed since 2010.

I would agree with you on both Johnson and Truss but the great similarity between Johnson and Starmer is both would say anything to become prime minister and neither had a plan on becoming prime minister. Starmer really is an expert on Chaos as he told us before the General election look around - just as much chaos as under Johnson.

@gandalf1957 After 14 years of Tory invompetence and cortuption expecting Labour to fix anything in a decade is just nonsensical.
One of the biggest issues is the media fuelled ecpectation that Government can make significant changes almost overnight.
I'm not hugely impressed by this Labour Government, but the attacks from the right wing media are appallingly biased.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
Yes and yes. Persuade me of a viable alternative and I’ll listen. So far I’ve only read a lot of exaggerations and naive assertions.
gandalf1957 · 61-69, M
@FreddieUK The alternative is to grow the economy which all the major political parties want to do. The unanswered question is how??

Truss went for an updated and much larger version of the 1970s Heath government boom when they pumped money into the economy and reduced interest rates as requested by business that then didn't respond so we got huge inflation. She and Kwarteng thought the reduced tax would encourage investment - that didn't work. Sunak and Hunt had to fix that and didn't have a lot of time to do anything else. This government has raised taxes to increase spending in the public sector and hopes to stimulate the economy that way but the increased taxes have reduced the private sector willingness to create jobs.

If I knew the answers i'd be a millionaire, I don't and I aren't. Unfortunately it doesn't seem that any of the political parties in the UK currently have the answer either. I wouldn't trust Reform or the Greens for that matter.

I'm not sure that the OBR is fit for purpose and I note that the government is only going to publish their views from now on annually and not twice a year.

I just hope someone will come up with an idea that works for growing the economy.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@gandalf1957 It looks like we're in the same place. I have no alternative either and I don't follow Daily Wail politics, so I am staying where I am for the time being. I'll vote to keep out the right wing unpleasantness and like you hope that someone comes up with something that addresses the needs of the country.

I wouldn't trust Reform or the Greens for that matter.

Exactly so.

I think the Brits should try to convince Trump to come and run their country after the MAGA Americans kick Trump out of Office for underperforming.
