Why Should We Have To Work Longer To Receive Our Pensions

I hear all these politicians talking about various subjects no-one mentions the British people now have to work longer.

The retirement age was always 65 years for men & 60 years for women it's about time those Pen-pushers were shown the door.

Its also unfair that you are taxed on your pension. You paid the tax on your wages so its being taxed rwice
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@nevergiveup You are not taxed on pension contributions. Taxation is deferred until you draw a pension, and is often levied at a lower marginal rate than you would have paid while working.
swirlie · 31-35
@nevergiveup
Pension contributions are deducted from your gross income and deposited directly into a pension account on your behalf, which means those pension contributions do not form part of your taxable income, year over year.

The only time you'll pay tax on your pension is when you start to collect pension from the plan, except your nominal tax rate will be about 40% lower than it was when you worked full-time, which will be the tax rate your pension income is based on... the lower rate, not the higher rate.

That is why working beyond your maximum pensionable years of service is a waste of your time because your full-time employment net income will be almost exactly the same as your net pension income!

@nevergiveup I agree, one shouldnt pay income tax on the age pension. However, it should be "means tested" So that the independendly rich dont recieve it. They dont require government support and the rich pay too little tax already..😷

whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
As someone who was caught in this net I have some thoughts. The first being that at the time the 65 year retirement age was established, that was greater than life expectancy. So not many of us expected to collect it.. Things are different now. And the number of younger tax payers is dwindling. While the number of pension beneficiaries is rising. So something has to give..If not, you end up like America, where more $ get printed to cover things and the $ has less value, year on year. In addition, personal retirement savings are far more common in employment than they used to be. So people can usually afford to support themselves in retirment to some extent. In my case, I have provided for myself well, but still qualify for pensioner support with many items like vehicle registration, health benefits and subsidies on government charges, which suits me..However, I did have to wait until almost 67 for these to kick in.😷

@whowasthatmaskedman you asked where our tax money goes. Some of it goes to what you refer to as “family planning initiatives in emerging economies “. I called it what it was : teaching Africans how to wear a condom. Does that give you an idea of how it’s spent ?
Also , it doesn’t make me feel good knowing that when I see a homeless person here in NYC
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@AthrillatheHunt I can only guess that the latex lobby there promotes the programs to sell more condoms in Africa. much as the baby formula companies promote bottle feeding programs as being better for the child than breast feeding. There is always an angle. But there is no profit in homelessness..😷

Yes, 100% agree.
And, if I am not mistaken, they get lifetime health insurance? Voted in many years ago I understand. But they do have the option to reverse that at any time and save us taxpayers $$.
HootyTheNightOwl · 41-45
@Teslin Don't forget their free meals, too - at £15+ per meal.
senghenydd · M
@Teslin They should reverse the pension age we should stand up for our rights.
Mines raised to 68 when I logged onto my pension account lol but you can opt out earlier if it's private and in exceptional circumstances i e. Ill health
senghenydd · M
@PepsiColaP Most private pensions give you a choice when you can collect your pension you have control, you can take a tax free lump sum or leave it with your pension.

The state pension what's really annoyed me why didn't government leave the retirement age alone, I've been looking at the population of the UK on Wikipedia from 1911 to 2021 it rise was quite predictable I don't see why people are blaming the "Baby Boomer's generation their out of touch.
HootyTheNightOwl · 41-45
I'm not going to live long enough to retire. I won't live to be 65, never mind 68.

Today, I learned that I can't even tip the dregs of my tea out of my cup and down the sink without putting myself in agony to the point I almost ended up on my knees on the kitchen floor.
senghenydd · M
@HootyTheNightOwl Oh I'm extremely sorry to hear that at least you don't have to work anymore, the State can & will support you to the end.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
It's scandalous.

Business people whinge about the taxes and benefits they have to contribute to their workforce and then the government gives them endless cop-outs that not only shrinks those benefits, they also get out of paying a decent wage so they're employees can't even pay in from their own salaries to make up the difference.
senghenydd · M
@BritishFailedAesthetic In 1960 British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan told the British people Quote "You never had it so good"

How true he was.!
@senghenydd Imagine getting a house that cheap these days.....
senghenydd · M
@BritishFailedAesthetic £2,000 houses are now worth £250,000 Super - mac was right.

I know we've advanced in technology nevertheless the 1960s were better times.
Adstar · 56-60, M
It's simple economics.. The boomer generation in the UK did not have enough children to pay the taxes needed to support the boomers as they flooded into retirement.. This deficit in children has only become worse since full blown feminism has made it's mark upon the minds of western woman.. The Feminist culture is a barren culture, all over the world where feminism has sway in the minds of woman the same population crash is happening.. The elites have mass migration policies to try to alleviate the coming economic disaster but that only works for a while..
Adstar · 56-60, M
@SpudMuffin Yes if only those woman had more babies.. thats part of the solution to an ever increasing retirement age delema... So yeah i am right.. My points have all been right..

@Adstar
The only people having babies in the UK are recently arrived minorities like shariah fundamentalist islamists.. Their woman have not embraced the feminist dogma for sure..

Are you able to substantiate this, or is just a prejudice you have?
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Well, with more people living longer than ever, we have to do something to make the pension system sustainable. Otherwise a shrinking working age population will end up working itself to death supporting a swollen population of asset rich pensioners.
Mordechai · 31-35, M
Because pensions weren't made for the volume of our current aging population. People are living a very long time now.
I think they're sort of a scam at this point anyway.
HootyTheNightOwl · 41-45
@Mordechai The thing with this idea that "People are living a very long time" is that there is a difference between the North and the South. More Londoners might be living a very long time - but, if you come north to some of these former mining towns, we still have people who aren't living to 60 or 65, never mind 70.
Mordechai · 31-35, M
@HootyTheNightOwl Definitely agree there, there's a lot more poverty and alcoholism. I'm originally from the north and I've lived in cities, small towns and villages so I've seen and felt it all.

I mean globally on average from the boomer gen onwards life expectancy in contrast to birthrate has widened significantly. In Japan for instance which mirrors our age demographic quite closely they're also increasing the pension age and I think we're going to see this more often due to the shrinking young population that can support pension to gdp inflation in taxes.
HootyTheNightOwl · 41-45
@Mordechai The good news is that countries that are experiencing shortages will make it easier to immigrate and emigrate. That's going to happen, whether we like it or not. We are going to be seeing more foreigners in England and fewer English people as the English take off for jobs that are better than cleaning and Amazon warehouse jobs. They're not bad jobs, but there's zero opportunities for promotion when you consider the sheer number of people coming through and people who might need to climb the ladder to a less physically demanding job.

And one area that's going to suffer most is elder care... especially when you have fewer children coming up to care for the aging boomers.
idontcareok · 70-79, M
in the USA people born after 1960, will have to work till 67 to get full social security starting sept. 30 2025, tommorrow
senghenydd · M
@idontcareok All this goes against the grain my forefathers and yours fought for a better world, raising retirement ages is disgusting as far as I'm concerned, their hitting the hardworking population if they can't balance the books they should go.
senghenydd · M
@idontcareok Those people started working believing they could retire at 65 with a pension, in fact that was a contact surely the government can only change the retirement age for school leavers who haven't started working for a living.
idontcareok · 70-79, M
@senghenydd according to the social security site, it raised retirement age every year by just adding 2 monthes check it out, im 75 so nothing to worry about except living longer lol
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
Ask a Swede
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
Work will set you Free!
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Because the super-rich don't pay into the funds at a rate that would keep them liquid?
senghenydd · M
@ChipmunkErnie For over a hundred years Men retired at 65 & Women at 60 the governments have failed the British people and should think again.

I am a Grey Voter I have my pension I'm simply thinking about you lot
The mainstream and the ownership in all Western countries have reached the limits of thatcherism, or trickle down economic theory with austerity for the population.
The only exit is war!
YoMomma ·
But they give millions in rich benefits and living expenses to the hostile invaders/immigrants
senghenydd · M
@YoMomma I do the sums they simply don't add up I've watched PMQs and debates I:m very disappointed with that crowd in the Commons I wouldn't vote for any of them.
