Parking In The UK.

Where can you find a place to park in Great Britain that doesn't have yellow line's, only out of town Retail Parks. Guy's we have too many vehicles on our roads I live in a semi-rural part of the country not a city, cities are worst there's nowhere to park, the rush hour around my town was between 8 am & 9 am and 4 pm to 5pm now it's most of the day. I don't enjoy driving anymore i hate the Councils and town Planners who have caused this mayhem - Something Should Be Done.

There are too many people and too many cars. Unfortunately the only solutions are politically impossible (ban a lot of driving) or immoral (ban a lot of people). There's no solution because the state has continually f****d this up. The only hope left I think is to make the country so completely miserable that millions of people leave. They seem to be working hard on that plan...

@SunshineGirl
Then we are trapped in an infinite loop of pretending to offer high quality services without funding them adequately

Only just noticed this?

I agree Labour has a huge opportunity but will merrily waste it (just listen to them bleating about a dept. leadership election this morning like it's the most important thing in the universe), partly through uselessness that is infecting every political party (there are good and certainly well-meaning individuals on all sides but they're hardly the majority of any of them), and partly through being beholden to markets that think barely more long-term than an MP does, and certainly don't care about people rather than numbers.

@Lhayezee Politicians are only human. They are worried about their jobs like the rest of us . . many will lose their seats irrespective of how well they serve their local constituents (as did some Tories in 2024). A little compromise and understanding from both sides would help.
Lhayezee · 26-30, F
@SunshineGirl Oh absolutely I have sympathy (it's a terrible job I'm amazed anyone who isn't a psychopath wants to do it), but a little spine along with a little compromise would go a long way.

I travel by rail when ever possible. . Saves so much time . Just use the car to park at or near a Railway Station .
senghenydd · M
@devonman So you park you vehicle without a parking permit in these streets.
devonman · 61-69, M
@senghenydd Of course not , The station or council car park . You’d get a parking ticket if you park without a permit .
senghenydd · M
@devonman You confused me when you stated "Residental Parking" great that's sorted, a friend lives a mile away from her nearest Railway station up a big hill in a permit only zone/area it makes me so angry.

No problem at all where I am, we are all
in long queues of road improvements schemes and gas mains repairs.
We never get to the destination and park.
senghenydd · M
@peterlee It's funny because at the moment Welsh Water renewing a large water main in my street they're currently taking up 40% of the parking places which only adds to the mayhem my council has never considered parking where other councils have.
Im in London. My road is 1st non paid parking up from the train station. I leave my house just before 7am and there are people queing for my space
SchoolBelle · 61-69, F
@V00doo I am lucky, my London apartment has secure underground parking.
senghenydd · M
@V00doo It a ridiculous situation we need more parking spaces, maybe the answer would of been to release more land when building new homes.
Matt85 · 36-40, M
i usually end up parking on residentual streets
senghenydd · M
@Matt85 The residential streets where I live or commute to all have parking restrictions I do have one hour places where I can park and stay away for four hours.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
I think it is car drivers who have caused the mayhem . .
senghenydd · M
@SunshineGirl I live in a street that was mostly built in the 1880s there is permit parking both sides of the street there's only a single lane for vehicles to get to the main road which sounds and is ridiculous and there's always illegal parking where this street joins the main road due to a Conservative Club there, parking places and the lack of parking places drives me mad, I hate to think what parking will be like in ten years time
I visited London with my late parents in the 1960s and witnessed the parking problems there and never thought for one minute it would happen in my home town.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@senghenydd Setting aside so much land for private vehicles that on average remain static for 95% of the week is ridiculously inefficient in itself.

There is nothing inevitable about car use increasing. The younger generation shows signs of challenging the current orthodoxy (not least because of the high cost of private motoring) . . but it would help if central government did not always favour motorists over other forms of transport.
senghenydd · M
@SunshineGirl I understand all new build properties have to have at least one parking space so Government do realise there is a problem.
The Water Board are currently digging up 50% of my street it was difficult finding a parking space before, now it's even worse,
I don't live in city I can understand the problems city planners have, my Council simply don't have as many excuses I also ride motorbikes which are much easier to park in fact the parking problem is forcing me onto two wheels.
peterlee · M
Ed Milliband solution is that we all have electric cars with no charging points. Power cuts due to his mad energy schemes should be enough to ensure cars are left at home.

The cull of old people is by the euthanasia bill. Less old people, less cars.

Kill a few pensioners off by removing the winter fuel allowance has been tried. Less old people, less cars.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@senghenydd Your parents and grandparents presumably did not own cars, which is why the streets were empty . . you could follow their example.
peterlee · M
@SunshineGirl Only if there is public transport!

In 1957 there were buses everywhere, and a rail network second to none.

There was even a very fast train service from London Marylebone to Manchester passing through Leicester, Nottingham.

So what do they do, close the line and build a shopping centre over Nottingham Victoria, confining Marylebone Station to the Monopoly board.

East Grinstead station was kept open of course, Beaching commuted to London from there.

The folly of the past.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@peterlee Compare the timetables of the 1950s with those of today . . that will rapidly cure you of nostalgia. There is still a good national rail network that will hopefully improve in punctuality and affordability now the privatisedmodel is being dismantled.

Public transport requires compromises . . it will never be as convenient as owning a private car . . people need to decide what their priorities are and vote with their feet (or train tickets).
Gumbodidlo · 56-60, C
We need more motorbikes 🤔
SchoolBelle · 61-69, F
So, who are you going to stop driving?
SchoolBelle · 61-69, F
@senghenydd More of our precious land should be concreted over for car parking? Blighting the landscape and increasing the risk of flooding?

That's the job of the Town Planners?
senghenydd · M
@SchoolBelle We need to use up more land it's too late in most of our over crowded cities, there wasn't any excuses where I live we could all see this parking problem coming from visiting cities and they took no notice just caused this mayhem, the America's don't have this problem.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@senghenydd Planning authorities require developers to make provision for public transport. People move to new estates with the attitude that car ownership is essential and do not make use of the public transport provision. Public transport is withdrawn through lack of use and the roads become more congested . . 🤷‍♀
