Sad and true

Let us be grateful that action has been taken before anyone was hurt (unlike with the flammable cladding to apartment blocks). The material is not dangerous by itself (unlike the cladding) but requires more freqient replacement than conventional concrete.
The issue is international in scope and many countries have not even banned the production of aerated concrete. I am the last person who would sing the praises of this government, but the actions taken so far are decisive and (hopefully) effective.

@SunshineGirl yes trouble is when you have a government constantly messing with benefits and telling parents they need to go out to work, and parents follow that instruction, you now have THOUSANDS of parents being UNABLE to go BACK to work because they now have to be looking after their children when they SHOULD be at school !
How many are going to lose their jobs as a result of that ?
How much unnecessary hardship is that going to create ?
Everything has a ripple effect when one area of society falls short of expectations

@Picklebobble2 Yes, well I'm more concerned about the disruption to childrens' education and social development . . but as you say the ripples spread out widely and this should be food for thought for any 'small government' conservatives.

And yet when you replace that concrete, we now have a new option. We now have the recipe for the concrete of ancient Rome. Material which has survived 1000 years in many places we should never use any other kind.

TBF, Labour Governments (and I will criticise them plenty) did spend significantly more on schools than the Tories.
There already is a funding crisis in education and this just adds to it.

@SW-User 🤔 just a speculative question where do you really think the buck should stop the department of eduction for not funding school maintenace and repairs adequately. or at the door of the local education authorities for not prioritizing the meagre funds to these repairs . obviously somebody has too take and carry resonsiblity for this as whilst schools are shut because they are not safe kids education suffers and those who struggle with school work more so

SW-User
@smiler2012 Academy chains these days, and local authorities.
But there has been government funding for the new schools programme of Gordon Brown.
There is some accountability to the Department of Education and Science.
A mess then, and no one will take responsibility. There will of course be a Public Enquiry which will achieve absolutely nothing but feed the pockets of lawyers.

@smiler2012 Local authorities are really hard up and have been for ages. Since Osborne and Cameron implemented austerity, they have had to implement swinging cuts.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
But the fact they've been aware of this for so long 😱

SW-User
@Picklebobble2 And that is the essence of it. Both political parties and probably the liberals were fully aware of the problem for a generation, with no concern for human life.
Rishi may handle it badly, it is a problem he inherited from others.
It tells us all too much about our politicians. But nothing we did not already know.

Sounds like things are falling apart over there. At least Biden seems to be getting money out there for infrastucture but the maga folks are mad because they lost their chance to do it first. All of the debt is going to have get paid off some way or; more likely, the money is going to become more worthless.

SW-User
@Tastyfrzz Yes, we are governed by indifference, corruption, deception and greed.

@SW-User trumpism at it's finest.

I heard there's no reason not to cut a few corners. The people in Turkey also have crumbling concrete and a lot of profits from business. At least they're closed off from the victims of US wars and Brits certainly are responsible for that. Maybe it's not bad to crumble. Foreigner people won't arrive because we don't want to be crushed.

Rishi says he is not to blame, even though he cut the school repair budget by half when he was Chancellor.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
Aren't the roads and bridges affected?

SW-User
@MrBrownstone Hospitals and Courts are.
Where were the Civil Engineers in this? And the University Engineering departments?

@SW-User It's almost as if goverment pockets taxes collected and neglects it's citizens.
SarahTheHooker · 26-30, F
As far as I am aware the Government have slashed the budget for schools and repairs whilst knowing about this existing problem.
Schools are going to suffer. Teachers are going to suffer. Pupils are going to suffer. Parents will suffer.
Pretty conclusive amount of people that you're screwing over, Rishi.....

@SW-User Well that seems interesting. It sounds like there’s something going on here more than meets the eye can you elaborate?
SarahTheHooker · 26-30, F
So don't be presumptuous of people and what they do for a living. You saying that all prostitutes are stupid? Really?

SW-User
@SarahTheHooker No, you are highly intelligent woman. And who said I am worried about what you do for a living, and why. I’d already figured that out.🙂 As you say in your profile there is much more to you, and your posts are a pastiche of the reality you inhabit.
