yes you are right in every thing you say . nato is there as a meer defensive deterrrent mainly in the west to counteract any military or political aggression from the former eastern bloc and now russia alone . putin made an unilateral decision to invade its neighbouring country on a very weak and flimsy proviso . alas apart from supplying military advice and arming the ukrainians the west and nato hands are rather tied . any military intervention and boots on the ground from the west in ukraine would be a disaster and bring russia and nato into direct conflict and the consequence it would lead to do not bear thinking about [changeisgonnacome]
