Are there any tariffs on Russia?

Just asking? I really don’t know but didn’t see Russia mentioned.

No. Because the tariffs only apply to countries the US trades with.

Putting tariffs on Russia would literally mean American companies are trading with Russia in violation of their own sanctions.

That is what sanctions mean.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow we are trading with Russia, 3.5 billion in 2024
@Sevendays Do you have a source for that figure? Seems doubtful since Russia is literally the most sanctioned country on earth including North Korea.

The only thing the west still buys from Russia is oil and that is because they don't really have a choice.

And that has been done mostly by Europe buying it from India at a massive markup.
Sevendays · M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrowgoogle it. There are plenty of sources
Sevendays · M
Radioactive chemicals, fertilizer, platinum
@Sevendays So it appears it is mostly fertilizer and the answer is obvious. Do you want $1000 grocery bills? And that is assuming you don't have crop failures if we could not completely replace the Russian source.

@Sevendays You do know what most fertilizer is made from right? Oil.

If you want to commit economic suicide that is on you.
@Sevendays Even with Saddam Hussein while the country of Iraq was under so many sanctions children starved the US and Europe still imported oil because guess what. You need it.
@Sevendays It is the same reason why the US doesn't engage in a serious trade war with China. Because they have the ability to wreck the US economy and western economies more generally.
@Sevendays You don't have to like it but there are certain realities that don't fit conveniently into political narratives.
Sevendays · M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow the reality here is that 47 and Putin are cronies. If you’re saying that we can’t survive without codling Russia then we are in trouble.
Sevendays · M
@Sevendays first you say that the US isn’t trading with Russia, but when I say we are you say it is because we have to. Sad state of affairs when the “supposed” greatest country in the world can’t survive without Russia. If he truly wants to make America great again, maybe that’s a good place to start.
@Sevendays Ah. So you are a Russiagate conspiracy theorist. Facts don't care about your feelings.

Russia is the most sanctioned country on earth so it seemed unlikely. I don't live in the US so I don't make a daily point of digging into the minutiae of trade.

Once I saw what trade still remained it was pretty obvious why.

Hate to break the news to you but we have been a global economy for decades. And I have no interest whatsoever in this petty nationalist nonsense either.

Protectionism is a great way to wreck the USA.
Sevendays · M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow oh, I think we need to trade with other countries but not the ones who would just as soon see us eradicated.

We’ll have to just disagree and move on. One more thing, he listed some island countries that have no human inhabitants. The whole tariff thing is a big show so he can look like a big strong man.
@Sevendays The current and most likely theory for that is that he was so lazy he created the list using ChatGPT or some other AI.

And I don't disagree. But it is not really any different from Biden's tough guy posturing with Russia and China. The same arrogance is involved.
Sevendays · M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow
We agree on that
Khenpal1 · M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Actually USA buys fertilizers from Russia for 1.3 billion per year and Uranium
@Khenpal1 I am aware that Russia is a huge producer of fertilizer since it is basically made with oil.
@Khenpal1 That being said sanctions have always had cutouts or were violated when convenient. In this case it is essential.
