What did the West do to provoke Russian hostility ?

I think that answer is fairly self evident. Putin and his boys are madmen. It's just the 21st century conundrum along the lines of Nazism of the 20th century. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. I'd read that Putin either see's or wants to style himself after Peter the Great.
Typical stuff really; rage, false pretense, paranoia, land grabbing.....and so forth.
