Is it not time the freeloading Irish got their own military instead of relying on the British to keep the Russians out of their airspace and seas?

Their best fighters are currently this bullshit :

I am 100% for Ireland upping its military forces.

@Ozymandiaz didn't think I'd actually see Hibernophobia online in 2023.

@Ozymandiaz Yeah I don’t know what the motive of the OP is as he’s not even a Brit. He’s possibly just stirring.

I know is made local news about overseas air policing is being challenged because tax payer funding is under review.
@Morvoren He is stirring. Still, 75% of the fibre cables that connect the world run through Irish waters. they are essential for trillions of dollars of trade. It is in everyone's best interests to look after them.

Saying that, as one of the richest countries in the world per capita Ireland should be investing more to help protect its own interests.

@Ozymandiaz Yes. I think it’s established that being neutral and low military numbers doesn’t stop a state being a target. Ireland should get in the game and join NATO for its own interests.
@Morvoren I am not in favour of joining NATO. I would be in favour of keeping Ireland's neutrality but arming to the teeth

@Ozymandiaz I think people here want to know why air aircraft are in Ireland, Estonia and Qatar when they probably shouldn’t be. Just sell them jets and leave them to it.
@Morvoren Well, they are in Ireland because sensible people realise it would be foolish to leave a lot of the world trade infrastructure unprotected or at the very least protected by a country that has zero military capability. So in short, if they are there they are protecting their own interests.

@Morvoren bear in mind that most telecommunications throughout Europe and the rest of the world run through Ireland. If Ireland's information infrastructure is damaged, it can lead to large blackouts.
@basilfawlty89 It is not serious blackouts that are the issue but a complete crash of global trade which would lead to a catastrophic global financial crisis unlike anything seen before
Morvoren · F
@Ozymandiaz It’s not serious, but there’s no reason why we have to pay for other peoples national security.
@Morvoren That is a fair point but that is not what you are paying for
Morvoren · F
@Ozymandiaz What else would we be doing in Latvia?
@Morvoren I only know about Ireland sorry
