Would you support US involvement in the Iran war no matter how many American lives were lost?

If it depends, how many American lives are worth it before you wouldn’t support it?

If a war is just and critical to national security, this question does not arise. War is (or should be) a serious business. You weigh up your options and assess the appetite of your people for prolonged engagement before you start a conflict.

If a war is just...

This is the key question. The only question really. And it is not an easy question to answer for any war.

@sarabee1995 What was the last just war the US was involved in?
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@GeistInTheMachine Interesting question. Before answering, we need to agree on terms, right? What is a just war?

Is a just war defined only by going in to stop genocide in concentration camps?
Or, is it just to help one's friends and allies in the world when they get attacked?
Or, is it just to pre-emptively go in when another state-actor repeatedly threatens you and your people?

And is the "just" determination invalidated if there are also economic benefits to going in?

Most people here would tell us that the US was negligent for waiting so long to join in WW2 (a war that most consider "just"). And once I was ripped apart here for being American by someone on that very basis (how I can be held accountable for WW2 was never explained). And that person? Yeah, turns out he was from Sweden. 🙄

So tell me what a just war is and I will tell you the last time we engaged in one. It's not an easy question.

Personally, I would rather see us engage in more just wars and fewer economic wars. 🤷‍♀
@sarabee1995 it isn’t just a philosophical question. The justification for WWI was in my opinion rather flimsy and nonsensical compared to that for WWII …as just one example.
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@BiasForAction WWII wouldn't have been justifiable without WWI, so senseless wars just set the stage for more crap down the line.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@BiasForAction Absolutely. WWI was ridiculous. And WWII would never have happened if it weren't for WWI.

@GeistInTheMachine More than wouldn't have been justifiable, there wouldn't even have been a "Third Reich" if it weren't for WWI. The Pacific Theatre would've been a regional conflict.
