US SWers - what have you heard about English food?

Brits - please don't comment. I'm just trying to gauge opinions
Top | New | Old
I like a lot of it actually
Younameit · F
They have shepherd’s pie? I like it
UKNaturist · M
@Younameit - no shepherds were harmed in the making of this 'pie'
Got my eyes on you hoes
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
Sort of on topic.. A couple of times (pre covid) We had relatives of mine from Britain come over and visit, staying with us. They were stunned by the sheer variety and quality of offerings available to us in meat, fresh produce and the variety of supermarket options on the shelves. They are used the the Aldi style of supermarket and even our Aldi had them jealous...😷

@whowasthatmaskedman

Did you toss a few huntsman spiders
on the barbie for them? 😯

whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Thinkerbell I had forgotten that..The first barby of the season you light up and stand well back.. I think most of them make it out.. If not . Drumsticks all round..😷
can't go wrong with bangers and mash (but i'm canadian)
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@beermeplease

When I first heard that 'banger' meant sausage, I thought that it had a sexual connotation, but apparently that was never the case.

UKNaturist · M
@beermeplease - Canadian opinions welcome
Akimbo75 · 46-50, F
There's something called black pudding and it's made with animal blood?
ArtieKat · M
@UKNaturist I couldn't have explained black pudding better myself!
TheHammer · M
@Akimbo75
Yes. And it's pretty good!
@Akimbo75 Delicious it is.

There has been for many years the myth of English food being bland/tasteless.

My guess is that this originated from the U.S. military stationed in England during WWII - my understanding is that England was experiencing heavy food shortages and rationing, which led to boiled this or that and rather plain foods.

I think that myth is still around but fading out.

some dishes have very unusual nicknames
UKNaturist · M
@NerdyPotato - sponge pudding with currents
@NerdyPotato You down for trying it, then??? 🤔🤔🤔
@HootyTheNightOwl I think I'll pass...
tenente · 36-40, M
My favs are fish & chips, bangers & mash, bubble & squeak
Uncfred · 70-79, M
@tenente Bubble and Squeak, we had it on Mondays, it was what was not served at Sunday dinner and often delicious.
I'm American and have visited England a few times. Things I like to eat in England include fish-n-chips, Cornish pasties, and ethnic Indian food. I used to enjoy shepherd's pie, but I gave up red meat.
I've heard its bland.

I didn't think it was bad at all. I quite liked the food there.

I might be bland.
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
Steak and kidney (🤢) pie.

Tried it once.

Never again. 🤮
UKNaturist · M
@Thinkerbell - I must admit I'm not keen on the kidney part. Far nicer as a steak pie 🥧
AthrillatheHunt · 56-60, M
Food is bland . Curry chips is popular now.
Bignakedguy · 31-35, M
Heard of something called spotted dick
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
there's a reason there are no global restaurant chains that originated in the UK...
GoFish · 41-45, F
fish and chips
IM5688 · 70-79, M
I've heard it's boring and quite bland, but I've never actually had any except for English Earl Grey tea, (which I personally though was horrible.)
Gibbon · 70-79, M
Boiled meat and blood pudding tells me to stay away from it. No thank you. And you guys still don't know the difference between biscuits and cookies
Harmonium1923 · 56-60, M
Bland and overcooked. No idea how to make a salad or cook vegetables. Better off getting South Asian takeaway.

During the World Cup, that it’s sparse and nasty… from brits
Munumbis · 46-50, M
Iv heard how bad it is over and over. Im calling bullshit on that though. British people post pics with tost and piles if beans. Looks good to me.
@Munumbis You tried beans in mashed potato yet???
Munumbis · 46-50, M
@HootyTheNightOwl I've had both. Not together but it seems good to me.
RedBaron · M
That’s great and all, but you should be trying to GAUGE opinions.
UKNaturist · M
Good call !! I'll change it 😉
MethDozer · M
That your people spent 200s building an empire in order to secure access to exotic spices from around the world so you can never ever use a single one.
