Have you ever been Summoned for Jury Duty selection?

I just got home from spending my whole day in a Jury assembly hall with 250 other potential Jurors. What a gong show, what a total joke the judicial system really is.

Summoned for jury duty about 10 times and served on 3 juries, all as foreman. I can now claim to be too old to serve.

@exexec
Somehow, I cannot envision that day going well for any black guy who was up on charges in Texas. Is that true?
exexec · 70-79, C
@swirlie I never personally witnessed any mostly white jury making an unfair judgment on a minority person. I'm sure it happens, but in our area, it seemed that juries tried their best to only look at the evidence in the case.
swirlie · 31-35
@exexec

That is very comforting to know! Thanks for that!
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
Yes, about four times, picked twice, but only sat through a trial once (in the other case, the lawyers settled before the trial began).
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@swirlie

Well, not so much enjoy, but I do try to take it seriously and to be fair.

That's what I would want from a jury if I were ever a defendant or plaintiff.
swirlie · 31-35
@Thinkerbell
Sure, good point! Especially if you were handcuffed in court and had a police escort.
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@swirlie

I can see why your defendant's lawyer opted out of a jury trial and went with a judge. If that guy had to appear in handcuffs, that might prejudice the case in front of a jury.

And perhaps the lawyer was "friends" with the judge.
Yes, at least three times, and I've served on two juries.

@ElwoodBlues
I guess I shouldn't complain then... most people who've responded to my post have served on a jury several times before, whereas I only got called to show up but I wasn't actually selected for jury duty.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
Yes, but I was overseas and couldn't serve.
swirlie · 31-35
@sarabee1995
You nicely dodged that grenade! Lucky you!
😀😀 I can imagine.. not one would agree with another and must have been like entire crowd getting into a bus pushing the other..

Judicial system ?.. 😀 A mockery of Justice in a democracy.

There actually isn't any links to speak of, nor reading material for that matter. Stuff like that isn't put on public display in the Canadian judicial system. The only people allowed to view such information are those involved in the jury selection process, but that information is read to the prospective jury members behind closed doors by the Judge hearing the case

The only other place you'd find reading material on the case would be after the fact when the trial had ended and the details were then published in the news paper, but usually only if it was a high profile criminal case.
@swirlie so jury selection is on case to case basis and not a regular process to qualify Jury for various cases..
swirlie · 31-35
@in10RjFox
That's correct. With 250 potential jurors in a jury assembly room, the Judge comes in and discusses the basics of the criminal trial in question. The purpose of that is to let everyone think about anything which may disqualify any of them from jury service, such as knowing members of the accused's family or knowing the witnesses involved who are also named during this closed-door briefing.

At that point, 12 jury members are randomly selected from 250 potential jurors.

I’ve been summoned several times but never picked
swirlie · 31-35
@SJones48

Well, I was in a handful of people at the tail end of 250 who otherwise got called by the Judge, which means I was "excused" from the proceedings. This also means I will be buying a lottery ticket tomorrow because the lottery prize is up to $40,000,000 where I live!
SJones48 · 41-45, M
@swirlie hope that you win
swirlie · 31-35
@SJones48
Well, I won my release from the jury pool today, so I think I'm on a winning streak for sure! 🤣
only once a couple of years ago. was a medical malpractice suit. was quickly dismissed and spent the rest of the day in the jury room
MarineBob · 61-69, M
All three times the judge dismissed me, the last time I didnt think a trial was necessary and said so
swirlie · 31-35
@MarineBob
That's how I felt about the trial in question that a trial wasn't necessary if there were 4 witnesses to a sexual assault in the parking lot of a local bar. The guy on trial was an Indian guy who was trying to beat the charges.
BlobbyMcBlobface · 100+, M
Thankfully not
swirlie · 31-35
@BlobbyMcBlobface
I think if a person was really into that kind of thing that jury duty may be thought of as doing one's so-called 'civic duty', but I'm not actually one who believes in that civic duty BS which they feed to those who get called in the form of a pep-talk rally. The only think lacking is a parade and fireworks.
Been there a few times. Never picked.
swirlie · 31-35
@Sojournersoul
...never thought of that!

One guy sitting beside me today said "that's what we get for being good citizens!... we get to be forced into Jury Duty against our Will, to preside over the fate of some dic who committed a crime!".
@swirlie something I hope I never get called for again or picked.
swirlie · 31-35
@Sojournersoul
I hear ya!
FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
Yes, served on one jury for drunk driving, every other time I was dismissed….
swirlie · 31-35
@FreeSpirit1
Wouldn't it be funny to be called as Juror for your own drunk driving charge?! 🤣
FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
@swirlie that would be a trip
EmilyMom · 51-55, F
pretty much every 4 or 5 years. Don't see what you are calling a joke ?
swirlie · 31-35
So, the reason for me being called to be a potential Juror was because of a criminal trial that went to trial today without a Jury. The trial was held up because a Jury had not yet been selected. So those Jurors selected today went immediately into 'criminal trial mode' inside a courtroom after sitting around all day waiting to be selected or not.

What happened was, back in May of 2025, an East Indian guy came out of a bar at 2am after the bar closed and sexually assaulted a White girl in the parking lot, then held her captive in his car while sexually assaulting her again.

There were 4 witnesses who saw this happening just as they too came out of the bar, who then called police. They were 2 East Indian women and 2 White women who were there together on a Friday night.

The East Indian guy decided to plead 'not guilty' despite there being 4 witnesses, simply because he got himself a lawyer who thought he might be able to get him off the hook for sexual assault and forcible confinement.

So there we were today, 250 people who got called into court, who sat in a waiting room for 7 hours because some East Indian dude thought he could beat a rape charge and a forcible confinement charge, despite there being 4 female witnesses to the assault.

Like, where the fukk do these guys come from in the real world I wonder?
@swirlie he might as well pack his bags and go straight to jail.
swirlie · 31-35
@Sojournersoul
Interesting thing is, the Premier of Ontario Canada (Doug Ford), the guy who ran those tariff ads in the USA during the World Series that Trump got all pissedoff about, is the same guy who just a week ago terminated all bail options for anyone who commits a sexual assault in Ontario.

Like you say, that East Indian dude is going straight to jail and he isn't getting out from a bail hearing because there won't be one anymore! The truth is, from a Federal perspective, I think the new laws state that he'll end up getting deported back to India after he does his time in a Canadian prison.
@swirlie i think that is a good thing he terminated them and sure he will get deported after prison time.
ekwalizur · 41-45, M
Justice industry more like
swirlie · 31-35
@ekwalizur
Meaning what?
I throw them in the garbage.
swirlie · 31-35
@MsSwan
You are the second person who's told me that same response! Have you EVER heard from the courts about you not showing up for Jury selection?
@swirlie Nope. My father used to throw them away too, and he never got in trouble for it.
swirlie · 31-35
@MsSwan
I have always suspected that result but was never in a position to test it. If I ever receive another one in the mail, I'm putting it through my paper shredder.
swirlie · 31-35
Is anyone interested in what the trial was about that I got called to be a potential Juror for?
@swirlie I would like to know.
swirlie · 31-35
@Sojournersoul
..okay.
Didn’t you get paid to be there?
Let’s say there are 50 professional jurors in each city. Is that due process? I still have seen no limo. @swirlie
swirlie · 31-35
@jackjjackson
This is your limo driver. You can't miss her. She drives a red car....

I see. When does she and the limo arrive please? @swirlie
