Force US to switch to metric

Canada should implement a rule that anything the US sells in Canada must use Metric measurements, and not a conversion from Imperial to Metric. That might force them to switch to Metric finally.

It's odd that practically the first country to throw off the yoke of British rule is the last to keep the old Imperial measurements.

Not even Britain uses them anymore (except for miles and pint measures.)

When I was studying engineering 50 years ago, we did everything in metric in hopes that the U.S. would change. Oh well, maybe in my grandchildren's lifetime.

It’s been slow, but many things made in the US are metric now.

@JamesBugman Imperial sizes will be with us for a long time. Too much equipment still operating with std fasteners. Cars and motorcycles made in the US are metric.

@JamesBugman
I went to HomeDepot here in Canada last week and everything is Imperial.

That is unequivocally NOT true of your experience in Canada.

The import regulations for Canada state that everything imported for sale in Canada from a foreign country like the USA, must be displayed in metric measure and this includes everything sold at any Home Depot in Canada.

What Home Depot will do is post Imperial measure for tools and screws etc, but will also post metric measure for screws, nuts and tool sizes in the same immediate area of the store shelf where one can choose either metric or 'standard Imperial measure'.

The truth is, there is no metric equivalent for 1/4", 1/2", etc because the old Imperial 'standard' measure is an entirely different 'size' when it comes to tools in a tool box or nuts that screw onto a bolt.

For Home Depot to do as you otherwise have stated would shut down Home Depot in Canada overnight.
@swirlie That is exactly what happened to countless businesses in Canada when Home Depot first arrived. They shut down within 6 months because they could not compete with the huge enterprise. Home Depot was selling the same things below cost. All part of their takeover strategy. After the other companies closed Home Depot prices went back up. We do still have a couple of box stores that are Canadian owned..

You're joking 🤣
If they can't get vaccines right them metric is way beyond them😜

There is nothing Canada can do that will force the US to do anything at all. 😂
carpediem · 61-69, M
@SpudMuffin Since the end of WW2, the US has been paying tariffs to our "friends" overseas. Now that the tables are turned, you're all whining like the babies we always knew you were. The fact is, you can't survive without US trade and protection. The US pays the vast majority of NATO funding. For decades, the losers in NATO haven't even been able to meet the 2% levy and the US covered the delta.

That's over. Trump is your daddy...isn't he? 😆 You need to get in line or big bag US prez will spank your childish butts.

You go right ahead and keep whining. We're laughing over here. You're especially entertaining. So please...don't stop 🫵 😂

@carpediem unlike the majority of Americans we know how tariffs work - that's why we find you so funny!

@SpudMuffin LOL... yeah you go with that.
