I Have Been to Another Country

1st H was Army. We spent many years in Germany. A beautiful place. A few of the apartments we were housed in had been discovered to have hidden many families From Hitler. Beware of the ones in the top floor.
Many were haunted. One rather annoying apartment had a family with two toddlers that cried most all night.
I asked the Lady if her baby was ill, as I heard her shoes tapping on the wood floor as she paced back and forth quieting her Baby. When I told her the sounds I heard she almost went White. Told me She too heard these same sounds...
We later learned they... 'Germans' were searching all the families to be removed and sent to be gassed.
So, just know that if you had thoughts of going to see Auswich It is a sad place to be. I am not Catholic, but borrowed a crucifix to hold when we toured some of the camps. I still to this day, MANY years later feel my body tingle and twist whenever the subject opens up.

When I was in the Navy we took an R and R into Germany. That was in 1970. There were remnants of the Nazi regime visible all over. In Bergtenstagen we stayed in a guest resort which was once an SS barracks. You could see where the emblem had been removed from above the from door. At night you could hear the footsteps on the wooden corridor floors. It was strange. In garnish, we hiked into the woods and found a "shrine" with photos of men in Nazi uniforms. That was upsetting as all get out. We stayed in Munich and asked the hotel concierge how to get to Dachau and were told there was nothing to see there, not to bother. We did bother and the effect was far from nothing. As an American, and Jewish, it was frightening and awe inspiring. We couldn't wait to get out of Germany after that.

This is meant as a comment on your post, but, also a reminder that we need to be sure NEVER AGAIN! I read Ullrich's book about the rise of Hitler in 1930-39. Trying my best not to enflame many on here, I suggest we take a careful look at what is happening in the world now. The rise of totalitarian rulers, the attack on the press and use of propaganda to shale election outcomes and corrupt the minds of innocent citizens is totally in parallel to the history of the 1930s. As Churchill said, and I paraphrase, if we do not know the history and learn from it, we are bound to repeat our mistakes. I have every hope that sound minds can prevail.

My Dad in-law fought in WWII at the Battle of the Bulge and went onto the concentration camps where he helped the survivors with clothes, food and to get to where they wanted to go after they got their strength back. He had a lot of photos he took of the camps. Really scary what democrats can do to others.

@acpguy it sounds like you have a very liberal agenda yourself. the way you look down and criticize the glorious past of the south?? 😲
acpguy · C
@newbie You must be kidding "glorious past of the south". You must be a liberal.
newbie · 31-35, F
@acpguy have you ever been to a stately southern plantation home? if not glorious when it was well kept and in it's best condition, what would you call it then?
newbie · 31-35, F
actually most germans, although not all of course, were for hitler back then. statistically most places you were staying would have been their houses, but i guess it sounds better these days to say people were against him?

I want to go see Auschwitz someday. That's history we should never forget. But I've heard it can be very moving.

@LarryZ At least all the Walls are now down.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@LarryZ By the way, Auschwitz is in Poland. We did visit Dachau outside of Munich. It was a troubling experience.

Last night went well for me. Watched a bit of the TV before my eyes screamed to be set free.I love how my cat settles around my head, carfully protecting me from Danger.Zeus was a rescue. A blue eyed angora rescue.found by my grandsons. They named him Zeus.

I DO love remembering history . Those who lost it all. So very sad.forgive this old woman for not recalling these events accurately.
Laura · 22-25, F
did U find any articles from the war days?
Carla1951 · 70-79, F
@Laura in a way..I saw a photograph in a display. A young child lifting his arms from the Barb wire wanting to be helped over the wires. What set my alarm was this very same view was a dream I had many times as a little girl....also wanting to be lifted, or rescued and saved. I do recall waking in the night, going to Mamma and telling her the dream. That was soon forgotten.
