Actually the current restrictions were out on in 2019 I think due to the mad cow disease issue....

It's really a moot point.
We Aussies have no interest in meat from any other country.
We have a wide range of disease free choice here.

97% of our meat is grass grown at liberty with no hormones or antibiotics, and just the necessary vaccinations and anti-tick treatments, which cease 30 days before slaughter. None of it is grown in barns or intensive factories.
(Except for our chooks, but that's another issue.)

The remaining 3% is divided between wild and "wagyu".

The wild animals (buffalo, cattle, goats, rabbits, horses, camels, pigs and deer) are feral stock who have escaped, multiplied and cause damage in national parks or semi-desert areas. They have typically very strong gamey flavour, but are tough.

The "wagyu" is nothing like the true wagyu raised in Japan, but consumers treat it as a cheaper version.
After living most of their life on grass, the farmer brings the steers into yards and gradually shifts their diet from dried grass to grain. Once transitioned, he overfeeds them until they develop massive amounts of marbled fat throughout their muscles.
The lack of exercise and obesity makes the meat tender, succulent and sweet.
Most Aussies avoid this meat because it's unhealthy and cruel.
However, the farmer gets a huge price for it in Japan.

If Trump travelled more, he'd realise there's no point trying to sell coal to a coal miner.

@hartfire You forgot Kangaroo, Wallaby and Emu....(and Wombat for First Nations)
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@KiwiBird I havent heard of Wombat meat. But i have heard about the others in specialty restaurants.. Along with Croc...😷
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@whowasthatmaskedman You won't get Wombat in a restaurant...but your local mob often has it at cook-outs for special occasions like Naidoc Week etc. Tastes a lil like wild pork. I think it would go alright in a hangi.

Edit. You can keep your Crocodile....tastes of boiled chicken. Probably all they eat.

I've had beef in France and in the Philippines. The meat had a very different flavor from the American stuff. Given a choice I would choose imported beef.

The trump regime has begun importing live cattle from México. Now Texas again has a screwworm infestation. Screwworms were eradicated here in the 1950s.
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@Crazywaterspring Beef in France could very well be Equine.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@KiwiBird Thats actually become more of a specialty meat than a substitute these days. A few places put it on the menu. (But my info could be out of date on that)😷
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
@KiwiBird I used to enjoy horse meat when I lived in Sicily.
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
I am guessing it will be all hamburger product aka ground beef so just give Maccas and Hungry Jacks (B King) a miss.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@KiwiBird McD and Hungry Jacks both advertise 100% Australian beef.. Have you tasted an American franchise burger. The meat tastes like an aging bulldog has been sitting on it for a week..😷
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@whowasthatmaskedman I haven't eaten a burger at either of those places in Australia. Hopefully they both continue to support Australian Beef.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@KiwiBird Australian content is a selling point for these US franchises. One I suspect they will push more and more, given the current situation..😷
Nick1 · 61-69, M
It’s same with milk and dairy products. That’s why some countries don’t want it.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Nick1 I did hear Canada just rejected a lot of American milk...And Dairy farmers are already doing it tough...😷
@whowasthatmaskedman They use drugs on their animals down there to boost production, and don't care about animal welfare. Milk from US is not as safe or clean as Canadian milk. I personally would not buy it even if it was up here.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@JamesBugman I did read up on that. Apparently the rejected production is being put back into the domestic market, driving prices down further with oversupply. Another nightmare for the farmers..😷
The one thing Rump cannot control is public opinion, and his is extremely low at the moment. It will be a very high uphill climb for US beef in most other countries.
Well, unless the price is super low, might sway some people.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@JamesBugman He, and maybe a lot of Americans, dont get how hugely unpopular he is outside America, North Korea and Russia..😷
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
That is the problem wit US produce its just unethically raise with poor health standards
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@JimboSaturn In the end its corporate profits.. Who in their right mind feeds cows corn???😷

@JSul3 And it throws off the animals digestive system to the point they need antibiotics in the feed to keep them from bloating up...😷
akindheart · 61-69, F
and that is called free trade but at least the markets are open.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@akindheart I am all for free trade..But the way the US meat supply chain is handled from top to bottom is a bad joke..Which is fine with me as long as the joke stays on Americans. But even US fast burger chains blend Australian beef into the fatty, hormone and antibiotic containing American meat to make it taste better. Over here McDs and the rest all make a sales point of 100% Australian beef..I dont want my grandkids, becoming antibiolic resistant or messing with their hormone levels or building up pesticide residues in their bodies..😷
akindheart · 61-69, F
@whowasthatmaskedman i have heard that about MCD. good point and i don't blame you for being concerned.
justanothername · 51-55, M
Sounds like you need new undies for Christmas 🤣🤣🤣
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@justanothername I just got these "run in".😷
Adrift · 61-69, F
I hear goober peanut butter is a hot item these days.
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
BOYCOTT ALL IMPORTED US BEEF TO AUSTRALIA! It will get 'dumped' into the Australian market soon enough.
Convivial · 26-30, F
@zonavar68 nah... No one's indicating they are going to buy it so importers won't bring it in
