For those who wonder about the Australian character...

Article extract from the guardian about a statue found hidden in the archives of a Tasmanium museum... The sandstone statue dates from the 1830s

The statue, created by a convict in the 1830s, depicts what researchers say is very probably Lieutenant Governor George Arthur, the fourth governor of Van Diemen’s Land (as Tasmania was then known) and creator of the notorious penal settlement Port Arthur.
We’re talking about a most extraordinary political statement here,” he said. “The first freestanding western-style sculpture created in Australia, and what is it but a statement about the contempt held towards the government of the day? It’s pretty amazing. There’s nothing to compare it with.”

It's very well preserved . . presumably the sentiment was widespread in the penal colony at the time!

@SunshineGirl whatever made you feel it died out? 🤣

The typical Aussie character has a certain... Contempt... For those in power.... During WW1 some troops actually mutinied over the British officers they were placed under

@Convivial I am not surprised. Some of those officers were incompetent and criminally negligent.

@Convivial That's understandable, as many British officers were ignorant of the facts of modern warfare (at that time) and were reliving wars of the past when many troops were mounted and fought with sabres. Senior British officers ran the war from bases many miles behind the front lines and had no understanding of life in the trenches.

@SunshineGirl so very true... The concept of a meritocracy was yet to be invented
Convivial · 26-30, F
@novaguy2u yep, all true, and the common man paid the price

@novaguy2u According to Captain Blackadder, British military tactics were developed to counter grass-skirt wearing 'natives' brandishing pieces of fruit. "Afterwards we didn't take prisoners, we just made an enormous fruit salad".
