Maybe they are horrible books?
States like NJ & Mass - that consistently score at the top of the NAEP rankings year after year - did not ban any math books. Shouldn't the curriculum be similar throughout the entire UNITED STATES ?
It's unlikely local and state school boards would ever give up that level of control. Because if they did, they'd have to copy the curricula of states like CT, MA, & NJ that consistently score at the top of the NAEP. @pdockal (1) The fact that the top education states don't ban those math books means they consider them OK for use.
(2) Yes. Kids in elementary school meet friends with two moms or two dads more and more frequently.
(3) I think it's up to the school who to bring in for reading.
(4) No, cursive is obsolete. I was taught it, but I never use it, and I know many people like me.
(5) I'm not sure what you mean by "new math." I was in elementary school in the 1960s and learned inequalities, different bases, and some stuff about sets. That curriculum did not interfere with me taking AP calculus in high school or using different bases in computer software.

How do b you execute a contract without a signature ... go back to medival times with an x ?
Just because the books aren't banned doesn't mean they are ok
I can ban books without using the word ban like putting out an accepted list
Or a list that only has the good books and you have to use a book on that list
Not the school's responsibility to teach any 2 moms or 2 dads or gender dysmorphia @ a tender age .... IT'S THE PARENTS PERVOCATIVE .... teach tolerance only

Maybe it should be the parents' prerogative, but teachers end up with the duty of teaching kids how to behave in groups and making sure kids aren't mistreated. Kids who learned at home to single other kids out for ridicule need to be corrected.

@pdockal I searched. Wikipedia says
New Mathematics or New Math was a dramatic but temporary change in the way mathematics was taught in American grade schools, and to a lesser extent in European countries and elsewhere, during the 1950s–1970s.
Seems the common definition "new math" has been out of style for quite a while. But you're still unwilling to share your definition?

@pdockal Just because you decide you are done doesn't mean I can't continue to post! I stand by my point that if you want the best curriculum in your state you should look at those northeast states that are at the top educationally.
