People who say they’re Christian and a Conservative, that’s an impossible mix. Your party says immigration is bad. But your god says:

Genesis 1:26-27: States that all people are made in the image of God and have inherent dignity

Deuteronomy 10:17-19: Commands God's people to love foreigners because they were once foreigners in Egypt

Exodus 22:21: States that foreigners should not be mistreated or oppressed

Leviticus 19:34: States that foreigners should be treated as native-born and loved as yourself

Leviticus 25:35: States that poor Israelites should be helped as if they were foreigners

Matthew 25:35: States that welcoming strangers is a way to show hospitality

Hebrews 13:2: States that hospitality to strangers should not be neglected

The Torah also says:

Not to put any Jew to shame.
Leviticus 19:17

Not to intermarry with gentiles. Deuteronomy 7:3

To exact the debt of a foreigner, but not Israelite.
Deuteronomy 15:3

That an Ammonite or Moabite shall never marry the daughter of an Israelite.
Deuteronomy 23:4

Not to sell a Hebrew woman to a foreigner.
Exodus 21:8

To keep the Canaanite slave.
Leviticus 25:46

Not to keep alive any individual of the seven Canaanite nations.
Deuteronomy 20:16

To exterminate the seven Canaanite nations from the land of Israel. Deuteronomy 20:17

Always to remember what Amalek did.
Deuteronomy 25:17

That the evil done to us by Amalek shall not be forgotten.
Deuteronomy 25:19

To destroy the seed of Amalek. Deuteronomy 25:19

Apart from the passages in Matthew and Hebrews, all of your passages come from the Torah. What does the Torah have to do with Christians? It was for the Jew. It is our book. Jesus came to show God to the world, so all nations could follow God. They do not need to follow the 613 Mitzvot. Christians only need to follow the ten commandments.
@emiliya Christians and Jews both believe in the Tanakh.

@BohemianBabe Christians follow the Ten Commandments. They do not follow the rest of the mitzvot. The original poster is talking about commands God gave to Jews, before Jesus came. Jews are loyal to one another first and foremost. It would be disingenuous to say we are welcoming of foreigners, and that foreigners are treated the same. Christians may believe in the Tanakh, but the mitzvot given to Israel, the instructions God gave to Jews, are not for them.

@BohemianBabe Of course they do not follow the Talmud. The Talmud hates them. It was written by rabbis telling Jews how to follow the law, and it says only bad things about Christians.

“Tanakh is part of the Bible.”

Christians follow the Jewish prophets, and they understand God's word. They understand that He created the world and that He created man. It is understood that He wants them to follow the Ten Commandments, the most important commandments. The Tanakh also tells them the origin of evil, and why we have it.

“The Jews as a people emerged from Judaism, which came from the Talmud.”

The Talmud was written after Jews were scattered. Some say it was written to make sure that no Jew forgot the law and knew how to follow it, no matter where in the world they are. The rabbis are the authority.

I think God makes himself very clear in the Tanakh. I do not consider the Talmud to be holy. It has nothing to do with God, yet Jews everywhere follow it and treat it as sacred.

Jesus was a Jew who belonged to the House of David, from the tribe of Judah. Mitzvot were widely practiced and there were several Jewish sects, including Pharisees, the largest sect. Jews worshipped at the temple. This was long before any Talmud. What is left of the oldest synagogue in Israel is around 2000 years old. There is another one in Galilee, which they say is 1,800 years old.

“But generally speaking, Christianity does welcome foreigners, and this is shown in both the Old Testament (the Tanakh) and the New Testament.”

Both the Christians and Muslims like foreigners. They want people to convert.

@emiliya Jesus came to fulfill the law, not to abolish it. The law can be summed up as love God and love your neighbor as yourself. Do you not see how accepting immigrants is loving your neighbor as yourself?
emiliya · 22-25, F
@Theyitis Do you follow Jesus? Are you fulfilling the laws? He fulfilled them so we could.

I would never impose my will on the population of a country. If they don't want to accept immigrants, they should not be compelled to by the ungodly state. Is that what they pay their taxes for? Why aren't they being looked after by their leaders? What about YOUR neighbor?
@emiliya OK, perhaps we can avoid the argument by going with these passages from Matthew 25.

For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?

Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

Satisfied, @emiliya??

@ElwoodBlues Do you follow Christ?
@emiliya To an extent. Now will you address the question? Don't the Matthew "least of these" passages reiterate what the OP quoted??
emiliya · 22-25, F
@ElwoodBlues To what extent? Do you believe in God?

They do not reiterate anything. Her post is political, and she knows nothing about the Bible.

God would want us to help our own neighbor before others. He would want us to help our family first. If these Christians are doing a good job at being a husband and wife raising their children, God will be happy. If we feel we are being harmed by our government, we ought to be able to express that. Christians are already forced to live in an atheist state…can they have no say in anything? Why is this Godless woman preaching to them? Who is she clothing, feeding, and giving shelter?

You are misunderstanding what Jesus meant. How can you misuse the Bible in this way? He is speaking about giving yourself! This is about the way to live. It is not a political message; it is spiritual.
@emiliya Wow, you know what God wants!! However, my grandma told me not to trust anyone who claims they understand the mind of God.

Christians are already forced to live in an atheist state
DEAD WRONG!! It's a highly ecumenical state that embraces ALL religions!

You are misunderstanding what Jesus meant.
But you can't quote a single line of scripture to support your version??
emiliya · 22-25, F
@ElwoodBlues The Bible tells us why Christ came. Have you read it?

“DEAD WRONG!! It's a highly ecumenical state that embraces ALL religions!”

How can it be wrong? Is evolution taught in schools or not? Abortion was legal for 50 years in US. Can you tell me how that came to be if you are all believers in God? Is your nation a Christian nation? It can't be if you “embrace all religions.”

You aren't a serious person. Why are you using scripture if you are not a believer?

Christ says: “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
@emiliya Did I say the US is a "Christian nation"?? No I did not. I said we were a highly ecumenical nation that embraces ALL religions. And that has worked for us for nearly 250 years.

Is evolution taught in schools or not?
I am friends with three Catholic priests; NONE of them deny evolution; NONE of them see any conflict between the Bible and evolution.

Your quote does NOTHING to deny the sentiments expressed in Matthew 25 which echo those in the top OP post. You are just trying to stir up division; we have more than enough of that already.
emiliya · 22-25, F
@ElwoodBlues I previously said: “Christians are already forced to live in an atheist state…can they have no say in anything?”

It is irrelevant there are other religions. What does that mean to Christians?

“I am friends with three Catholic priests; NONE of them deny evolution; NONE of them see any conflict between the Bible and evolution.”

Is this supposed to mean something? Evolution began to be taught in schools in early to mid 20th century. Schools became more secular, starting in the 19th century. In America, secularism continues to be challenged by parents who do not want their children to be taught evolution. There are Christians who say they believe in evolution, and there are Christians who say they don't. In 1962, the Supreme Court ruled that prayer should not be mandated in American schools. Darwin's theories had grown in popularity and American schools replaced creationism, which was widely taught, with the theory of evolution. Some states opposed this and banned it. The Supreme Court changed this in 1960s and 1980s. In 1987, they ruled that teaching creationism in schools was “unconstitutional.” It tends to rule in favor of secularism and atheism.

“Your quote does NOTHING to deny the sentiments expressed in Matthew 25 which echo those in the top OP post. You are just trying to stir up division; we have more than enough of that already.”

You aren't one of Jesus's brethren, so he may not care what you think. Does he care what the blonde piece thinks? Probably not.
@emiliya You keep trying to distract from the question at hand: Don't the Matthew "least of these" passages from the New Testament reiterate what the OP quoted from the Old Testament?

You claimed the OT quotes were invalid, superseded by the NT. Clearly the NT has the same moral imperative (your attempt at denial is shockiingly scripture-free), and your personal attacks on me won't alter that fact, nor will your attacks on our nearly 250 year old ecumenical structures.
emiliya · 22-25, F
@ElwoodBlues The OP used mitzvot given to Jews. Christians follow the Ten Commandments. Tell me if you follow 613 laws? Do you sanctify Shabbat? I am assuming you don't sanctify it and that you go out on this day. How about eating matzah on Pesach? What do you think about Sukkot? Do you put tzitzit on your clothing?

It says Jews cannot marry foreigners, and that if money is loaned to a foreigner, there has to be interest that you must exact. If you loan it to another Jew, you should charge no interest. You also can't make another Jew your slave, or allow a gentile to mistreat a Jew. Jews did not accept other peoples and other cultures. The Canaanites practiced child sacrifice and idolatry. That had to go. Other peoples came and they were not embraced. The pagan Romans came and destroyed the Temple. Jews had three major revolts against the Romans.

Christ does want us to follow his ways. Sacrifice and selflessness are fundamental Christian values. In some passages, the word “brethren” is used. This tells us that Jesus does distinguish between his brothers and those who do not believe. You have to follow him.
@emiliya Clearly the NT has the same moral imperative about helping the poor, injured, imprisoned, etc (your attempt at denial is shockiingly scripture-free), and your attacks on our nearly 250 year old ecumenical structures are irrelevant.

Christians only need to follow the ten commandments.

The real Ten Commandments, Exodus 34:11-28, are ethnocentric specific to Jews only. They do not apply to Gentiles.

If you want to follow the Jesus character, be sure to engage in self-mutilation to prevent yourself from sinning. And wash your buddies' feet and douse yourself in expensive perfume.
