My grandmother used to live on the south side with my cousin and said she would hear gunshots every night. That was in the 80s. Today the mayor is defending crime while everyday regular people are thanking Trumps troops on the street for clearing out crime.

@PatKirby The South and West sides are awful. You can't even drive through those areas. I feel bad for the people who are essentially stuck living in those areas while the mayor and governor don't care in the least. And even the near north side is becoming dangerous. And that is a very expensive area just off Navy Pier.

I lived in North Chicago for 5 years, I used to go to a bar called The Checkerboard Lounge to listen to blues music. There were a couple other bars, The Malibu and Hillside Lounge. There were always people with guns, I stayed away from the trouble and minded my manners. There was never any trouble for me there. The only place I was ever really scared was in Cabrini before it was gentrified. That is the only place I ever saw civilians shooting it out on the streets. I am a little nervous in any big city, Raleigh, Charlotte, Dallas, Atlanta. Lots of people means lots of victims, I try to stay in rural areas. I avoid cities whenever I can. Is Chicago really any worse than Baltimore or DC or Houston? Maybe in terms of gang shootings but every large city is more dangerous than smaller communities.

@Roadsterrider Yes, every large city is more dangerous than small. And Chicago has always had issues in some neighborhoods. I also recall Cabrini Green. Kids coming out of Mother's on Division had to be careful they didn't go West and into big trouble. And there are areas that been trouble for decades. But the cancer is growing. And what about the people who live in those areas? They are continually forgotten about and their plight is simply accepted.

Chicago has become a major drug distribution center. Gang violence is driven largely on the drug trade. We either write off some of the poorer areas of the city and say those people's safety doesn't matter, or we do something to deal with the crime. So far, democratic mayors have been either unwilling or unable to handle it.

You can be sure it's safe wherever the mayor lives.

Not to mention the security detail that protects him wherever else he may go.
