Made it into the city today
Drove 5 hours to get here, tried to stop for subway but I didn't find anything suitable. It's hotter than the devil's vagina out here, and my car's AC is apparently broken, so I was drenched in sweat by the time I made it.
Checked in with my airbnb, shoved as much of my shit as I could into my room. It's pretty tiny, so I couldn't fit everything, but I got most of my shit in here. The door's locked with a long passcode, but there's a fingerprint scanner. The guy running it tried to scan mine in so it'd be more convenient, but I guess my fingers are too smooth and we couldn't get it to work.
I only brought a little bit of food, just some pea soup and some veggie patties. Walked to the apartment building I'd scheduled a tour with, and the office is closed. They didn't call ahead to cancel or anything, just closed to office and were done with it. I poked around a little and yeah, the place is pretty crummy, save for a nice-lookin' pool. Didn't realize how bad the location was either, until I was actually on the ground there looking around.
So I went back to the airbnb to regroup a little. I brought veggie patties and pea soup as meals, figuring I'd pick up some other shit when I got here. Walked to the nearest grocery stores, which happened to be discount places. Guess this is a pretty low-income area, which sorta explains the defunct homeless encampment I walked through along the way. As you'd imagine, the grocery stores didn't have a great selection, which is fine in most situations bc usually I cook with beans & stuff and get most of my snacks online. But the place I'm staying at only grants me access to a fridge/freezer, a microwave, and an air fryer. I ordered some Soylent and I'll probably order more prepared foods so I won't have to just live off those two meals for the next two weeks.
There's a guy I've been wanting to rent an apartment from, the place is a damn bargain but since it's a standalone place, there aren't any communal amenities like a lounge, pool, or game room. Having those kinds of things really helps fight cabin fever through the winter months, but it's a hell of a lot closer to the high-end grocery stores that I like. I feel a bit bad sayin' all that shit bc I know it effectively means seeking out a more affluent area to live, but it is probably gonna help me live car-light, which is at least a win for the global proletariat anyway.
Hope this post finds you well, I'm gonna go take a shower.
