Although I am an atheist I am willing to be open to the idea of Jesus being a real person.

From my incredibly basic understanding of the fella. I interpret him being an incredibly intelligent and enlightened guy who amazed his followers during his time so much that they've raised him to a almost impossible level of perfection.

I absolutely agree. With the part about him probably being a real person. The reason being that if someone had made him up, his exploits would fit the Old Testament prophecies perfectly. What we have is someone whose life seems to superficially fit, if you have an imperfect understanding of the Old Testament.
