:) excessive self esteem can be as bad as low self esteem, maybe worse in that it may inflict misery on others, in contrast to low self esteem that tends to be private.
Simple, don't flaunt successes and don't burden others with your short comings.
Growing up, a cousin was apparently successful and bought a Cadillac, but kept it hidden in his garage, reluctant to let others see him driving it, and fearful of what they would say. Probably accounts for the popularity of Buicks in the 40s and 50s.

@Heartlander Very well put. I agree. Thank you.

Biblical teachings.
Seeing a person in need and stopping to help them.
Recognizing really how blessed my life has been despite all the troubles, and stepping off my perch to help others less fortunate.

I DO have a problem with excess pride. I remind myself that pride was what caused Lucifer to be thrown out of heaven.
I have a very sad tendency to believe that I am smarter than most people...so I remind myself, by failing at very difficult puzzles and quizzes...that at best I am only a B+ sort of person.

This brings to mind the big DOD. “Zero Defects”program of the mid 1960s that came to be after a series of costly DOD and military mistakes.
Zero Defects was supposedly the result of everyone, from private to general to GS17 taking more pride in their work, and the words PRIDE, ZeroDefects, ZD were linked together to motivate everyone to take pride in their work and end all the fuckups. Painted on practically every hangar door and any available wall space in however large the letters could fit: PRIDE.
I do well remember the day, someplace or other while taxing across the ramp for takeoff seeing the big 5 letters painted on a hangar door and whispering into the hot mic “P R I D E”, to which the flight engineer responded “yep, Pitch Right In and Dick Everything up”. He nailed it. It’s been my definition of pride ever since.

the old saying that pride goeth before the fall. i think it might come from the bible im not sure. and the thought that everyone that we meet has something to teach us. (i read that in the book The Celestine Prophecy)

@Penny
I think I read that 40 ... 50 years ago. As I recall, it drew lots of attention.

@Penny I just checked, copyright 1993. It seems like 40 years :)
By realising that I am only a sinner saved by God's grace.
Without the Holy Spirit, I would not even remotely be interested in the things of God.

Pride is not always a bad thing.
Its stubborn ego that is usually the problem.

@Adrift Excellent point!

Being told for years you're worthless, that nobody wants you not even your parents makes pride nonexistent.
