The reality is that the Rapture is now only believed in by what is called the Protestant Lunatic Fringe.
As well, basically consumer driven. There is a great deal of money to be made in the stream of books devoted to imaginative stories on the subject.

Have you read the Bible Bella98 ?
Also i would like to point out that the popular depiction of the rapture is a certain type called Pre-tribulation rapture doctrine..
I do not believe in the pre-tribulation rapture but there is enough confirming scripture to support the belief in a post tribulation rapture.. If you are interested i can post to you the scriptures that support the Rapture and scriptures that point to it's timing..

@FormerAtheist I've met enough Biblical literalists (particularly in this country) to understand why atheists would get that impression.

@LordShadowfire Let me guess; they also believe the King James Version is the only legitimate version, and that all the others are somehow tainted, or too "politically correct".
I don't know which country you're referring to when you say "this country", but it clearly isn't my country. If I had to guess, I'd say that it was the U.S. I've heard a lot about the fundamentalists who seem to give Christianity a bad reputation over there.

@FormerAtheist You guessed correctly on all counts.

@jshm2 "...laugh at you..." - I'm not American though, so I guess that's one other reason why I don't believe in it. But you're right, I don't know any other Christians apart from Americans who believe it.

This writer explains better than I could why the concept isn't at all biblical.

@FormerAtheist Some people simply love to believe in Jewish fairytales, regardless of what they are.
