It was written by people, not god, and was to help explain the world around them and explain where they came from. I believe it evolved when those in charge realized they needed more control over the population, so it became more and more absurd. If you can convince the uneducated and superstitious that there is someone who will come back one day, change their dirty water into drinkable wine, and feed them by, not sure, snapping his fingers(?) then you have your control.

Genesis has wonderful children's stories.

@hunkalove: I'm not sure it's really suitable for children. It could confuse them.

@suzie1960: It's pretty straight-forward storytelling. In the beginning, Adam and Eve, Noah. Fairy tales always have a dark side.

It's not quite all pure "fiction", like a novel. It's a bit more subtle than that.
It's basically an anthology of a particular society's beliefs, myths and self-view of its history, from some 2000 - 3000 years ago, in one relatively small region of the Middle East, from its own Late Bronze Age tribalism to Romano-Judaic times.
And apart from the proselytising to neighbouring countries in the New Testament it was written for that society alone, by men who could not possibly have imagined what the rest of the world was like then, let alone what it would be like 2000+ years hence.
Just as we can't imagine life will be like in two millennia's time.
Sadly, the rabidly evangelising seem to want the best of both worlds: modern conveniences but a society based on that of Moses' ideas he liked to kid his fellow tribes-people were written by their god.

@Daisy47: In which case, with respect, I believe you to be one of those who has been taken in by it.
