Reverence for God

Have a look at 2nd Kings 10 30-31! Wow a TBN preacher must have time travelled and visited King Jehu- Paula White? Kenneth Copeland? 🤭

Seriously though, after recieving a direct word from God King Jehu still did not do God's will and continued doing his thing.

How many of us are like this? We need to stop focusing on ourselves and stop worrying about any percieved consequences of what God wants us to do "What will people think?" "I'll be viewed as a Pharisee!"

A key thing in not following God's will for our lives is a lack of reverence, fear and respect for God.

Lots of preachers of popular networks, etc treat God as if he is some sort of frat boy drinking buddy rather than the creator of the universe, who will happily bring events on you at anytime to humble you in your pride.

Do not be like Jehu who was clearly concerned about his own happiness and did not realise true happiness is found in God, and as you grow in this knowledge the things of the world grow dimmer!

God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.

Above quote by John Piper.

How about 2 Kings 2:23-24? Any thoughts on that one?
@LordShadowfire Don't go the way of your bird. But you are aware only a few translations say children. More likely than not this was an ancient youth gang- you can google this.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@BritishFailedAesthetic I don't have to Google it. I've looked it up before. The exact Hebrew words they used were na'ar, which hypothetically could refer to an adolescent, and qatan, which definitely did not. Had they meant young men, they would not have used the word qatan.

Don't go the way of the dodo.
@LordShadowfire Lots of actual Hebrew scholars will agree with you. And lots won't.

Don't go the way of the dodo.

If you're reffering to being a Christian, well in the UK when you read about declining churches, dig deeper and look at the denominations. The church my wife and I attend has three rammed services and the humble little Baptist chapel we go to for Bible study is starting to grow, as people have seen the madness of society.

But I'm sure you're united methodist denomination in the US, with it's recent decision, will go the way of the dodo. 🤭

I've yet to find one who doesn't.
If you're reffering to being a Christian...
I'm referring to you ending up getting frustrated arguing with me when I know more about the book you are quoting than you do. Many others have given up and blocked me after failing to provide any single shred of evidence.
@LordShadowfire There are lots of Greek and Hebrew scholars who are Christians.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@BritishFailedAesthetic I really don't see how, unless they twist the facts in front of their eyes.
@LordShadowfire You know there are, c'mon man!
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@BritishFailedAesthetic I didn't say there weren't.
@LordShadowfire But you're getting desperate and saying they had to twist facts, etc when you know that isn't the case.

You should also know lots of Christians have access to the Greek and Hebrew when they use Blue Letter Bible.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@BritishFailedAesthetic I'm not desperate. You just don't like what I'm saying.
The word qatar means "little child" or "baby". And you don't like that, because it means that the kids making fun of Elisha were most likely just that. Kids.
@LordShadowfire Look at several Hebrew dictionaries, you will soon see even more uses and just like any other subject, new discoveries are always being made!
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@BritishFailedAesthetic New discoveries, or new ways of twisting the old ones?

No offense, but I'll take the word of someone who doesn't have a vested interest in defending it.
@LordShadowfire Just know there are Christian Hebrew and Greek scholars, and ones from Israel and Greece at that, who have an intrinsically better understanding of the language, anyway.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@BritishFailedAesthetic Yes, I'm sure there are. There are also so-called scientists who waste their lives in a pathetic attempt to debunk the proven phenomenon of evolution. What's your point?
@LordShadowfire It's different. Evolution is a scientific phenomenon, language isn't.

Sorry but neither you nor me are Hebrew or Greek experts.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@BritishFailedAesthetic *neither you nor I*

And while that's probably true, there's this new thing all the kiddies are doing called "research" and "citing sources".

In that spirit, the book I'm using for reference, which also cites its sources, is called "Illustrated Stories From The Bible (That They Won't Teach You In Sunday School)".

The author is very much a linguistic expert, focusing on ancient Hebrew and koine Greek.
@LordShadowfire Ofcourse but there will be Hebrew and Greek scholars that disagree with your author's interpretation.

Sorry but there isn't a universal consensus.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@BritishFailedAesthetic But there literally is one way to interpret written language. This is not like some random painting somebody did 60 zillion years ago, where nobody knows the author. The structural rules of the Hebrew language are known. They haven't changed. Literally thousands of years, and the Hebrew language has changed not a bit.
@LordShadowfire Well this is only over one word, not on the essentials of faith, I'm not going to lose sleep, there's different ways of interpretation and that's why it's so interesting.
@LordShadowfire Oh and FYI

LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@BritishFailedAesthetic Yes, because a screenshot is the ultimate in providing a citation. Can't fake a screenshot these days.
@LordShadowfire

But seriously, the reference is Strong's concordance.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@BritishFailedAesthetic Strong's Bible Concordance. I might have known.

Quite possibly linguistic experts, but with an agenda. That's the trouble.

Also, I appreciate you having a good sense of humor about the fake screenshot.
@LordShadowfire The screenshot was hilarious, we'll just disagree about the linguistics.
