When Jesus was dying on the cross and he said to God "father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing"

Why didn't he tell the people who were crucifying him that they needed to repent and accept him as their savior, or else God wouldn't forgive them and they would be sent to hell forever?
Maybe because his sacrifice saves everyone, whether they believe or not.

He did.. Later, through the Apostle Peter on the day of penticost.. On the day peter spoke to the crowd.. Some of whom had taken part in the execution of Jesus.. The LORD convicted many of them and many of them came to believe Jesus and trust in the atonement He secured for them on the cross..

Christianity is all about forgivness.. God wishes that all come to repentance and be saved.. Yes He wanted that for all who took part in his execution..

Oh and the Atonement ( sacrafice ) is a gift THAT MUST BE ACCEPTED TO BE HAD... Reject The WORD of God and Reject His offer of forgiveness and one will not obtain the covering of His Atoning Blood..
