When Jesus was dying on the cross and he said to God "father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing"

Why didn't he tell the people who were crucifying him that they needed to repent and accept him as their savior, or else God wouldn't forgive them and they would be sent to hell forever?
Maybe because his sacrifice saves everyone, whether they believe or not.

@SW-User There are no atheists in Hell. They all suddenly start believing right after they died

@Anton I know people who could die and look at the face of God and still deny his existence. They would tell themselves it's a result of DMT being released from the brain from death it scares me to think of the confidence people can carry

@SW-User Yeah. I always think of them as the people Jesus talked to when He told the parable (real event?) of the rich man and Lazarus... He said that after the rich man died he asked if Abraham could just send someone back and go and tell others that Hell exists, they would repent. But a few days later Jesus brought Lazarus back to life and even when people saw Him do it, they still didn't believe... There is no end to unbelief and mockery.
