How do scientists come to a consensus of what a chemical (e.g. a terpene) smells like?

Do they just get a bunch of professional smellers to get in a room and be like “ah yes I’m getting hints of basil, mango, and parsley”
I think they would reference other smells alot or use things like "sweet" or "floral". It's like "how would you describe the colour blue" - the way we interpret stuff is often subjective so we compare it to other things.

You can parameterize odors onto the same level as you know of the stuff you're trying to characterize. As to objectivity, I learned that at least three impressions independently according to each other can be considered as objective.

from what i understand they get people fathers housewives old people people from all walks of life
they will pay them like $100 or so for the whole day.

they bring them in & just have them try new scents they take notes & they then figure out what to do next

Terpenes?
Sounds like we're talking about the devil's lettuce. I which case those of us that smoke will say bullshit while stoned.

They use the most foul smelling being in the known universe (hillary clinton) as a base of reference
