Cigarettes, for sure. Also (off topic, sorry) watch just about any adult TV series "back in the day" where dialog occurs inside an apartment or home and you're bound to see a bar cart without distinctly labelled bottles but always a full ice container, a fireplace, drapes, table lamps, people smoking, women in dresses, neatly kept coffee tables, everyone wearing jewelry of some kind (especially watches)... lifestyles I never saw in my own experiences growing up.
