I think it depends on the country and how they use the military. In UK, the military is often seen as non-politicial which helps, furthermore the fact that they are in a job that has a real possibilty of placing them in mortal danger and they don't get paid a huge amount adds to it. They may be deployed here on civil contingency basis -e.g. covering for other public services - e.g. medical, fire fighting, logistics etc.
They aren't used as a weapon against political opponents here which makes a big difference - in countries where they are a political tool it is completely different.

I despise my countries military. People and governments having power over soldiers is a problem to begin with.

I have alot of respect for our military and the people who serve in it. I have very little respect for the governments that issue their orders though. That is an important distinction.
Many are sold a pack of lies to talk a teenager into signing up and then sent off to fight and often die for American empire projects.
I know plenty who came out the other side who are now pretty far left.

Providing the military is never used against it's own citizens I think there is a good balance. Unfortunately in the USA there is a propensity to 'call in the army' to deal with civil unrest.
Here in Oz I don't think that's ever happened. The army has been used to help out in all the floods of the last year.

neither.
I don't glorify the military but i appreciate that it exists.
There are things i can criticize about it. it's not out of disrespect, but rather trying to highlight how it can be better.
