Can being single be a barrier to career advancement?

I was told that in the corporate world that being single can be a barrier to career advancement. The theory is that married employees have more stability than tbose who are single;therefore, singles will find themselves locked out of the very top executive positions. While I understand that it would be illegal to make an actual rule to that effect within a given company,it exists as an "unwritten rule"that acts as a "glass ceiling "to promotion. Is there any truth to this?

no idea if this is right or wrong but that should not matter whether you are single or not . it is on ability and equal opportunity it should work on and a fair playing field [davidt8899]

Probably. Great responsibility suggests giving it to someone more likely to stay.

Yes there is some truth to this just as a single person has never been president of the US.
They want you to fit into the culture of their organization as well. This is old fashioned and mainly applies to very high level positions in certain companies.
You need a partner to attend functions, avoid a young guy who is dating around the organization ect.

@REMsleep Actually,a single person WAS a U.S President;alas, history has regarded him a one of the worst ones.
