Any advice from all you dilligent workers for someone starting their first summer job ?

Remember your boss is not interested in what he or she can do for you -- they are interested in what you can do for them

That will be true in every job you ever have

Have good work integrity: Show up on time, be personable, and put moderate effort into what you do. Mostly just don’t be flaky, late all the time, screwing off, always an excuse etc. The positive reference will come in handy later.

@WhateverWorks should i worry about getting a reference ? its really just a summer job.. selling fish and chips.

Depends on what your goal/plans are. For example, so your next job is in customer service of some kind. Yes, things you do in this job would be relevant to the new one you’re trying to get, so the positive reference is helpful. If you get another food related job later down the line then of course this would also be good to have as a positive reference. If whatever you do after this is unrelated then your manager can at least give you a positive character reference that you were reliable, warm etc etc. which can be helpful @Elena05

Be early, share ideas on how workflow can be improved after some weeks on the job, do more than what’s asked of you, don’t complain, avoid people who do. Good luck!
Enjoy it. Don’t get caught up in drama. Don’t call in with excuses of missing work unless you absolutely have to. Do your job the best you can do.

Don't let the stress get to you. Leave work at work; don't take it home with you.
