Fired 3 years into job, so upset

Guys.. I run a very small business with clients. I have a long time, my biggest by far client that let me go today. I only have a handful of clients. I’m at a bit of a loss. I’ve made a huge difference in their marketing and When I first started they were only getting maybe a handful of leads a month. By the time I left I boosted it to like 400 phone calls a month. I was doing all sorts of extra things like managing 15 different lead sources doing web design and social media.. a lot of work for 1 person! The design looks really top notch.. like it doesn’t make sense when you look at the numbers, they’ve seen a huge uptick in paid marketing revenue. However their organic marketing is down,, their industry is suffering do to recession and is down across the country, I work with a couple other companies in the same industry. The reason they let me go is that some marketing agency gave them a great 30 minute presentation and did some fear mongering and said the site was bad etc etc.. they had that meeting at 12:30pm and fired me at 1:05… 5 minutes after they got off that call. I just.. wow… 3 years of loyalty, working through the birth of my child.. all the sweat and tears I’ve put into that job and some random person comes out of the blue that says a bunch of untrue stuff and they just fire me on the spot,. I’m a little hurt and can’t get over the shock. Any advice?

My husband says I need to toughen up and stop thinking twice about it. He said honestly like I shouldn’t take it personal and that it’s probably not even really about me. All true things but like I just can’t process it or move on from it. These types of things, getting fired or loosing a big client upset me very much and for days I’m sure it will be.

This is always a pitfall to be aware of, from the first conract signing. When a vendor comprises most of the eggs in the basket, a small business is very vunerable.

It's way more complicated than this. I would advise taking this gracefully and write a letter of appreciation of having the chance to work with them and how much, you enjoyed the opportunity and that your door is always open, for further endeavors.

I do agree, the termination was made hastily. In the event they come back, by all means, raise the fees. you will feel, so much better and maybe this worked out, for the best! 😊🌷

This isn't personal - it's business.

It's very likely they brought into the spiel. Where offered competitive rates & figured maybe a fresh pair of eyes will offer their business a new prospects.

I know it likely feels you been stabbed in the back , only in a struggling market different options get a second look.

If this new company are not up to scratch. Knowing your value . They may well decide it's time to fold the company or come knocking at your door again.

Which is when you'll up your rates.

Because it's not personal..it's business.
Right 😉
Heed your husbands advice. You're in shock right now. Don't over analyze and critique yourself. Many people get fired everyday without clear reasons.. Hopefully after three years you have received compensation and you can regroup your thoughts and plan out your next steps..

Raise your rates when they come back. Business.

Please do not fall, for the myth, 'it's just business'. This is incorrect and shows a lack of experience in those who espouse it. Business is always built on relationships! You were entitled to a meeting, before termination. This was an extremely, very poor management decision and lack of respect.

So you know your first move, just to get it out of your system, is toprepare presentations for any of their competitors out there.. Yes.. I know its not nice..But you do have an edge to offer them. Just start with the smaller people. You dont want to get reliant on one big client again..😷
I can see how upsetting, when you lost a client for no real reason. It can happen, the old bamboozle, easy to criticize the existing marketing firm without having done the work themselves.

It is dirty pool, actually, but if they can only win through negative competition, they won't come through on the job. And when that happens the client will be too embarrassed to admit they were conned, and you can't get them back.

I believe that eventually they will get theirs, and you will go forward now because you have to. But there is no way to protect against that sort. They have to destroy themselves. Success is the best revenge.

If I know a bit about the marketing world, you probably got pushed out to make room for someone's friend. The real job in marketing is stealing positions and fudging the numbers

Your husband is nearly correct. I would be looking at the reason why you your client let you go, and how you can move forward

Sorry to hear that

The business is your baby and you put your heart and soul into it, that's why you take it personally. You shouldn't though, because it's not personal. It's just business. Every so often a company will decide that they need change to freshen things up. They need new ideas. This may be because they have new management who want to bring in their own identity to the job, or it may be because turnover or profit is down and they want to try and take a different direction. It happens. Often the change that they make turns out to be worse than what they had and they end up going back to where they started.
Wishing you lots of luck.
