Finally finding peace

If you have come here first read my story on religious trauma as this is what led me to Buddhism.
I searched for a long time for a peaceful spiritual path. My ex wife was a Therevada Buddhist so I had been to a monastery with her. My ex before her was also Therevada Buddhist and she taught me to chant in Pali. So I allready had some knowledge of Buddhism. After I came out of christianity recently. I wanted to heal my mental health and the trauma. I came to Buddhism and started to practice daily breathing meditation and metta meditation. I set up a buddhist shrine with a Lord Buddha statue so I could do my chanting and meditation there. Sometimes I play relaxing music too. I began to feel more at peace and at ease. I stopped praying and wearing a rosary at night. I stopped sensing demons and having weird experiences/bad dreams. I stopped feeling judged and my fear of demons and hell is still there. But it's beginning to get easier to experience new things without panicking about those things. I am beginning too bee able to go out short distances on my own and I am gradually healing. I used to feel a heavy feeling like a weight crushing my desires to be me, my very spirit. But Buddhism is begining to make me feel free.

@Entwistle thankyou I'll have a look I'm open to Mahayana teachings. I'm currently reading about zen buddhism. There is a zen temple near me so I may visit there. I'm currently emailing one of the monks to find out more about their talks there.

@RubiesandButterflies Zen is interesting. It deals with instant breakthrough..flashes of insight into reality. Satori.

That's really wonderful that Buddhism is lighting your path in such a way. I find Buddhism to be very helpful as well. There are so many insightful teachings that bring so much depth and richness to my life. Is there a particular teaching in Buddhism that you are grateful for today?

Im sorry you had such a traumatizing experience with christianity. Buddhism sounds like it is doing you so much good. Im glad you have found something so peaceful and healing that counteracts your trauma.

I'm so glad for you. Buddhism has so much to offer.

It can be really traumatizing when people become obsessed with enforcing religious orthodoxy.

For everything I know about spirituality tells me that humility before God or the universe, whatever you call it, is really the first and most important step

And awe and humility isn't something that you outgrow on your spiritual journey. If someone loses that, they've lost the journey

Too many people cause trauma in others by stepping in for God, so certain that their understanding is infallible, that they're right, you begin to wonder what the need for God is

I wish you every peace and happiness
