Richard Dawkins in his book The Selfish Gene (mid-70s, I think)

There was a socialist named Robert Meme that was working under a grant for a New Cambridge State University to study the changes social behavior. He concluded that in order to express feelings without outright expressing their feelings, they could put words on pictures. Hence the phrase “meme”

I don't know because that was not something in my day. I think it came out with the internet. 🤣 it's Greek I believe. Meaning, I'm not really sure. I know what it's about today, that's it.
Richard Dawkins. He wanted it to sound like the word 'gene', and he seems to think they're somehow 'alive', LOL
@Bel6EQUJ5 somehow 'alive'??

Not 'alive,' but they get passed on to others and sometimes 'mutated,' and the 'strongest' mutations get passed on the most. It's a pretty good analogy to genes.

Great question, and did they profit from it?

@WillaKissing Dawkins wasn’t thinking in that direction at all in 1976.

He used an Ancient Greek word to describe cultural ideas and their spread .
