I think the error in paranormal investigation is that no one, has definitive proof that things you experience are how they are in reality. I personally have some spiritual gifts and had many spiritual experiences. The problem is that one has no set of guidelines, concrete explanations, or legitimate definitions of what any experience is, means, or does to the experiences. Ghosts, possessions, impact on relationships with God and their cost eternally. So, I think it is foolish outside an issue impacting someone's life in order to get the church involved.
