Do spirit boxes really work or just fake? [I Paranormal]

Im not convinced... but i was at a paranormal investigation once and my friend and i were totally spooked when we heard a voice scould us for laughing!
It was a tad freaky!!

I have never tested one but they seem like a scam to me.
