No, the Greeks, English, and I believe Norwegian concept of souls being tortured in hell throughout eternity grew into the Christian theology. The New Testament is written with the concept of Greek theologies, whose theologies of hell later in time overtook that of the Old Testament.
Sheol which is the Hebrew word defined as hell simply means a place of darkness where the dead go awaiting judgment, no torture, no eternal burning in fire.
