In order for Jesus to wipe away our sins and open the gates of heaven, He had to be crucified (sacrificed) to His Father. The instrument of that sacrifice was Judas, who had to betray Jesus in order for Him to be put to death and mankind to be saved. God must have known that Judas would do this (indeed, He must have created Judas, specifically for this purpose) and yet Judas represents everything that is selfish and treacherous about human nature in our culture and beliefs. Judas saved mankind with his act of betrayal.
Poor Judas, the ultimate patsy.
