Do You Believe in Ghosts?

I just bought a new house.

My friend asked, "What if you only got a good deal on it because it is haunted?"

I said, "Then I will make a new friend."

As always I ask this: Can you clearly define what is a ghost and what is the evidence? Are they made of matter? Leave any residue behind? Emit or reflect light? Can they be detected by temperature or some other measure?

If ghosts exist, why must belief matter?
