You're asking questions for which there are few answers. To answer adequately, the responder must believe also in one God, and that's an assumption. I think the easiest answer is that not everyone does believe in one God or they believe their manifestation of God is better than others. "Our god is better than your god" has been the theme song to countless religious wars, though to be thorough, religion is often - way too often - simply the veil behind which lies power, status, wealth, political ideology and the need to subjugate other men.
Thousand of gods exist in the minds of those who believe in them but it's unlikely any exist in relity, especially those that are self-contradictory such as the christian one.
Even those who believe there is only one god can't agree which one it is or which particular description of it is correct.
@Sharon Maybe that's because everyone's trying to co-opt him for their own needs. Still, that's a reflection of religion, which is man's organized expression of faith. The faith itself may be beyond reproach.
God is a term that says the thing you base you life on. Atheists have gods. Everyone does. Some worship science, some worship money, some worship themselves but they all worship one or more gods.
