What were people like before mirrors?

How did beautiful and ugly people do in the past without a mirror?
DrWatson · 70-79, M
People saw their reflections in water.

And early civilizations would make mirrors out of metal. In ancient Egypt, they used polished bronze, for example.
Modern people tend to forget that reflections and silhouettes are all over the place.

Reflections in ponds?

Artificial mirrors date back to the Bronze Age, when they soon found this new-fangled copper-tin alloy could be used for making all sorts of functional and decorative articles including clothes hasps, brooches, combs, needles, jewellery - and mirrors as it takes a high polish.

The various Bronze alloys are still very important, but mainly now for engineering components.

polished obsidian
Reflective surfaces made of polished obsidian are the oldest "mirrors" in the archaeological record, dating back as far as 4000 BCE. The first evidence of mirrors as grooming tools dates to the 5th century BCE, in illustrations of elegant Greeks gazing at hand mirrors (these illustrations are found on antique pottery).
