an well wishers told you to " break a leg". Might it be because they want you in the cast?

I have done a lot of theater.

Actors have lots of superstitions.

One of them is that it is bad luck to wish someone good luck in connection with a performance.

So, "break a leg" has become the standard way to wish somebody well as they are about to go on .
