Baseball Fans...Thoughts On the Automated Strike Zone

Looks like it will happen in MLB in a season or two. Are you for it or against it? Interested in hearing your thoughts.

Why not? They use automated line calls in tennis when it's close. They could do the same thing in baseball when a close call could be important.

Well, they currently show camera views from in front of the plate (presumably with a telescopic lens).
I don't see why they couldn't do the same from the side or from above. 🤔

@Thinkerbell there is no sight from above in less in a covered stadium

How about stretching a cable from from one side of the stadium to the other above home plate? 🤔

Id like to see the technology first. The problem with balls and strikes is that it's dependent on a imaginary 3 dimensional boxes that changes depending on the batter.

The problem with perceived bad calls is the the fan can't see what the umpire sees.

The umpire's position allows him to see when and where a ball crosses into the 3 dimensional box and where it exits or if it never touches the zone.

Watching on the television or at a stadium only shows you 2 dimensions at once.

I am a former umpire and have had to call balls and strikes.

Whatever technology they use would have to be sophisticated enough to accurately record the path of the pitch, Adjust for each different batter and be able to adjust for breaking pitches.

@biandlargeny

They could do that with three cameras, one from in front of the plate, one from above, and one from the side (facing the batter). That combination could make a better determination than any human umpire could, especially since the option of a slow-motion replay would be available.
@biandlargeny my issue is less with the technology, but the lack of consistency with some umpires
biandlargeny · 56-60, M
@BizSuitStacy oh I agree one umpires strike zone may be slightly different than another. Also some umpires are more restrictive with pitches on "the black".

When pitchers are in the groove. All their pitches are hitting the mark an umpire twill give the pitches on the edge a strike call rather then call it a ball.

I'd be for it, but I think it would also remove the human element and conflict from the game.

But I love the pitch clock. Long overdue

Who's gonna make the call on a play at the plate?

There's a reason there's an umpire at every base
@SW-User true. It doesn't eliminate the need for the. HP ump

I think we got along fine with umpires for almost a 100 years, mistakes and all, I wish we never went to replays and automation. But since there is no turning back, and replays show how many bad calls there are, we might as well keep improving the accuracy. I’m just not convinced it can do the job with the strike zone.
@4thdimensiondream I understand where you are coming from. Replay can be a momentum killer.

We don't want technology to go so far that we miss things like this

I'm not watching to see an umpire do a great (or good or bad or terrible) job of getting the strike zone right. I am skeptical about the technical challenges, but if MLB can solve them, great, automate away.

What's next, automated batters? Pitching machines? Might as well just play a video game. LOL.

Kidding of course. I lost my love of baseball after the "Home Run Derby" was revealed to be complete BS. Sammy Sosa and his lies about the corked bat was the last straw. So now, I go to an occasional Cubs game when a subcontractor tries to win business and throws tickets and goodies at me. But I don't actually follow the sport.

For it . Umpires are out of control
@TexChik I think it will be here in two years once they improve the technology and make it consistent. The worst MLB umpires have a 91% accuracy rate. Not acceptable.
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
We have instant replay in football why not having missed strikes being called balls and vice versa, so why not to make the game calls more real than subjective to the human eye.

Why not have automated players, too, eliminate the human element right out of the game
