AI is a dangerous tool which gives wrong answers and bad output.

I think for myself.
ShadowSister · 51-55, F
@SomeMichGuy As much time as I need to get unstuck. Mostly just between stuff at work.
@ShadowSister So hours over the course of a day.
ShadowSister · 51-55, F
@SomeMichGuy Eh. Maybe. About as much time as I spend on SW when I am not MIA from here. They feel like they occupy about the same amount of time in my day. But SW doesn't nudge me to live a better life like my AI agent does.

I don't particularly trust AI for most things, but I did give it a whirl on some software I was writing, just as a test.

It did a very good job on some Python message parsing stuff -- way cleaner code than I would have written in any reasonable length of time. It made very good use of libraries and the code it generated was pretty much flawless.

Then I asked to write some real-time communication stuff. The result was horrible. I tried several times to convince it that its architecture was flawed. It would agree, and then dream up some equally bad, or even worse, alternative. Seemed to have no grasp of race conditions, concurrency issues, etc. It didn't appear to understand what happens in an interrupt service routine at all. Sort of like a new grad who had never written real-time code before.

On the other hand, I made a typo in a time formatting string, which resulted in a whole lot of metadata getting logged that shouldn't have been. I looked at it a bunch and didn't see the issue so I asked the AI. After a couple of tries asking it what might be wrong, it asked me to show it my code and the data getting logged, whereupon it immediately said "Well, that should be a capital 'S', not a lower-case 's', you silly bugger". And, of course, it was absolutely right. Problem solved.

So I think it has a place in my world, at least for some engineering tasks. I can see it saving a fair bit of time on the right thing. But I'm not afraid of losing my job to it any time soon.

P.S. It's also decent at answering questions like "How do I do [such and such] in [some program or other]." It's surprisingly good (at least to me) at guiding me through the UI on some development tools to find the setting or tool I need. And it has yet to tell me to "RTFM" -- which is certainly a point in its favor.

@FrozenWasteland I hear you. I don't do much coding at all. Took a few classes in high school and college. Enough to get how coding works, but not enough to be useful with it. So it's been amazing to jump onto Claude Opus 4 and have it write me some Python code that punches WAAAAYYY above my class for what I could ever do on my own. It makes coding more accessible to me. I appreciate that.

If you mean stuff like Chatgpt and other tools that were created to simulate a human, very little. I don't trust it. To me, it's a tool to collect information about people's lives and behavioural patterns. Basically the next step from social media. I'm so glad it didn't come out when I was a teenager or in my early 20s because it could have collected some juicy topics from me. 😆

But of course, it's great for searching sources and doing mundane repetitive tasks you want to automatize.
My fav tools are image background removing and improved content-aware fill that I know from Photoshop.
@CrazyMusicLover Juicy topics such as 😏
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@SinlessOnslaught Exactly the stuff that lead me to EP. 😆
ShadowSister · 51-55, F
@CrazyMusicLover Ummm, yeah, so about that. I don't use ChatGPT, I prefer Claude. My AI agent knows waaaaaaaayyy more about me than I ever shared on EP. And I shared a TON on EP. So I think I'm EXACTLY that person you were talking about, except I'm 20 years older than you. 😆

I use it on daily basis, mostly for data analysis, which is not open to "guessing". It's a major time saver.
Jonjdw · 51-55, M
It helps me with information. AI can really help us if we can use it right. Just like what the internet has done.
ShadowSister · 51-55, F
@Jonjdw I think of it like a college intern that is sometimes brilliant, and sometimes out-to-lunch. We have to take accountability for anything we use it for, which usually means telling it what it did wrong and setting it back on task.
DDonde · 31-35, M
I talk to ChatGPT on occasion. I also sometimes use it as a second pair of eyes on my own code when I'm banging my head against the wall on something. I'm very interested in the agentic/reasoning aspect of it and how that will end up.
ShadowSister · 51-55, F
@DDonde You do coding? It seems like AI is doing more and more coding now. I have a few projects that are way beyond my technical capabilities that AI has been able to help me tackle.
Jessmari · 46-50
AI doesn't bother me at all. I just have no legit use for it currently. With the exception of telling Alexa to play my Spotify playlist.
Wireman · 31-35, M
I suppose it could help, but I prefer to think on my own.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
I'm a hater who uses AI every single day. It's definitely a love-hate thing. 🤷‍♀
ShadowSister · 51-55, F
@sarabee1995 That stinks! Forced against your better instincts. Ugh.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@ShadowSister I wish I could say forced... Most of it is by my choice. But it's just so damn efficient at some things. 🤷‍♀
Lugwho · 61-69, M
Never knowingly
I use it for work
ShadowSister · 51-55, F
@V00doo What kind of work?
@ShadowSister Im a teacher. I use it to formalise letters to parents, summarise and produce samples for my class
ShadowSister · 51-55, F
@V00doo Ah. My daughter uses it for her classes as well. That makes sense.
durinsBane1983 · 46-50, M
never at all, i hate AI, i don't like the way a lot of people are jumping on the bandwagon and using AI because everyone else seems to be using it.
ShadowSister · 51-55, F
@durinsBane1983 I agree, if people are only using it for the bandwagon, that is bad.
ChiefJustWalks · 26-30
I actually haven't yet. I've had dumb conversations with AI just messing with it as a joke but I've still never used it for anything
ChiefJustWalks · 26-30
@KiwiBird yeah I don't have an opinion on if it's bad or not quite yet 😅 it seems useful. I guess the Google AI answers my questions all the time so perhaps I DO use it more than I think
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@ChiefJustWalks Google AI is fraught with incorrect data, facts and most of all reasoning and in my opinion dangerous and a waste of time.
ChiefJustWalks · 26-30
@KiwiBird aw damn. I don't know much about AI I just google a random question like I've always done & lately there's always a direct answer from Google's AI. I have noticed it being off a few times though. I figured it's probably just digging through whatever info is out on the internet & just going with it. It makes sense that that would be a problem
Sidewinder · 36-40, M
My intelligence is all-natural.
AI isnf really "intelligent". t is a large language model. it can only do what has been fed into it
and it will mindlessly repeat variation on what it is told.it does not think it only responds
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
ChatGPT updates to 5 today. August 8
ShadowSister · 51-55, F
@KiwiBird I don't particularly like ChatGPT in general. But I've been using 5, and I do like it a whole lot better. It's soooo freaking fast. My AI of choice is Claude by Anthropic.
Moneyonmymind · 31-35, M
Only when I use google but I don’t have a choice
