What was it like to do PE in bare feet?

Growing up in the US, going barefoot in PE was unheard of. We always wore sneakers (trainers) and socks. I remember a few gymnastic lessons in elementary school where we took our shoes off, but socks stayed on. After doing some research, I found out that it’s common in the UK to do PE in bare feet. Did you remove your footwear while getting changed, or were you told to? After reading some people’s experiences, I feel like I missed out on something.

I have to do PE in barefeet as lost my PE shoes when moving house. I have to go barefoot from the changing room which is okay if it is the nearest gym, but the other hall we use when the gym is busy is a long walk away at other side of school so not so good

@Mariagirl Do the other kids laugh at you?
Mariagirl · 18-21, F
@DavidT8899 No we are in last year at school so they don't really laugh though if we have to wait outside the gym for other class to finish a few of the boys look at my feet. I have to do drama class barefoot as well

@Mariagirl Do you enjoy doing PE in bare feet?
Mariagirl · 18-21, F
@GkB01 I would rather have something on my feet but it is okay. I don't like walking to the gym in barefeet when it's cold.

@Mariagirl It wouldn't bother me so much if the teacher was barefoot too,but if they're wearing shoes, than I imagine the double -standard would be annoying.
Mariagirl · 18-21, F
@DavidT8899 it's because I don't have PE shoes so not teachers fault.
DavidT8899 · 22-25, M
@Mariagirl Is it ever embarrassing?Do the other kids say things about it?
Mariagirl · 18-21, F
@DavidT8899 no were all 16 or 17 so they don't say anything.
DavidT8899 · 22-25, M
@Mariagirl Did you ever feel embarrassed?
GkB01 · 51-55, M
@Mariagirl Is the gym a long way from your changing room?
Mariagirl · 18-21, F
@DavidT8899 why would I feel embarrassed as that's the rules if you don't have PE shoes?
Mariagirl · 18-21, F
@GkB01 we have two halls where we do PE, one is pretty close and the other a bit away, why?
GkB01 · 51-55, M
@Mariagirl Just asking, would you be able to wear footwear to get the gym?
Mariagirl · 18-21, F
@GkB01 No, cause I have my PE shorts on so it would look silly and shoes or socks are not allowed in the gym. I have to go barefoot so just do it as it's the rules.
DavidT8899 · 22-25, M
@Mariagirl Well,it would be a natural emotional reaction,no matter what the rules were.
Mariagirl · 18-21, F
Why would I be emotional about walking to PE barefoot, that's a bit soft and weird😊
RaceFan88 · 31-35, M
@Mariagirl I think he means feeling embarrassed would be considered a normal emotional reaction, no matter what the rules state. Example, if I was forced to do something that I wasn’t 100% comfortable with I’d feel some embarrassment
Mariagirl · 18-21, F
@RaceFan88 I don't mind as used to it now and I like PE . I am not forced as I have never asked to be excused or to wear shoes to the class.
RaceFan88 · 31-35, M
@Mariagirl gotcha. Simply was just trying to rephrase what he meant is all
Mariagirl · 18-21, F
@RaceFan88 That's fine 😊 but it's not something to really get embarrassed about for me and I have done a good few classes since the original post.
RaceFan88 · 31-35, M
@Mariagirl oh nice! Glad that you are enjoying it!
QuietSophie · 26-30, F
@Mariagirl Do you have to go outside to get to the other gym? I would imagine your feet get a bit dusty.
Mariagirl · 18-21, F
@QuietSophie no it's a couple of long corridors but not outside
GkB01 · 51-55, M
@Mariagirl What's your favourite PE activity?
Mariagirl · 18-21, F
@GkB01 Running, badminton and dodge ball. What do you like?
