Has anyone seen polyamory/“sharing” work? Or does it always end in tears.

I’ve had FWB for a good few years, we tend to fill a void for each other at times. We know each others kinks and are happy with but we tried dating and it sucked. Last year we got together with another girl who is sort of FWB of us both, we spent about 6 months ‘dating’ but it was not brilliant as no one really wanted to be committed to a full on relationship.
