While generalizations exist for a reason, the important thing to remember is that each person is an individual. If you shut down everybody based on things beyond their control, you're going to end up missing out on a some quality people.
Just as you have your unique experiences, thoughts, and personality traits, so does everyone else. We have a habit of making negative associations in order to protect ourselves, but it's important not to make ourselves so guarded that no one is able to get in.
But I've had my fair share of retail too and that observation rings true far too often.
