Many Atheists Clearly Hate God. Why Is This?

If a person truly believes that someone isn't real, then how is this even possible? I don't hate any of the characters I've come across in fiction, even when within the story they've done horrendous things, because I know they don't actually exist, and so my hatred would be pointless and I'd only be making myself miserable for no reason whatsoever.
That being the case, who do so many atheists so clearly hate God? If He's not real, then... I'm sorry, but it makes zero sense to me!
I know a lot of atheists. None of them "hate" God, it would be like hating Santa Claus. Some do hate theists who won’t leave them alone. I don’t understand why people care who believes and who doesn’t, anyway.

From the atheist point of view, it only matters when theists try to establish laws based upon theological belief. That’s unfair because while everyone isn’t required to believe in a god, we do all have to obey the law.

And from the theist perspective, hassling non-believers won’t get you into heaven any quicker, will it ? 😳

@CrystalSkull I suppose it’s a matter of perspective. I worked with troubled students for over thirty years, the ones that society would rather forget.
That was my career, my job, my life.
In the case of this young mother, she said to me later that I understood her better than her own mother,, that yes she was I mother, but at times she had to be a fifteen year old girl. Someone has to pick up the pieces.

I have no Christian ethics, and don’t know what they are.

In terms of abortion, I feel there are circumstances that termination should occur. A rape, the health of the mother. A person in a mental hospital become pregnant by another parent, not the husband, an extreme example. But abortion is not a form of contraception. Life is precious. Yours is, so were the troubled disaffected people I worked with.
@SW-User I too worked with youth for many years. I still do. And I can tell you that girls are affected by unwanted pregnancies for life way more than unwanted abortions. Their education is taken away from them by having a child young, economic resources and health are affected. I didn’t say a word about abortion as a form of contraception. Don’t know where you got that from. Access to reproductive health education and autonomy over their own bodies (for everyone not just women) is key to improving this across the world. I am glad you were able to help this woman, not everyone has someone to help them.

@CrystalSkull

I’m glad you are working in this area too.
It is challenging, frustrating ..

As for boys, they run away from their responsibilities. But not all. And some even pick up the pieces.

When you say "clearly hate" have you met only the few who openly state that attitude.

I would suggest most atheists and agnostics simply do not need any sort of religion in their own lives, and could not care less if there is a god or not, as long no-one tries to "convert" them.
I'm an agnostic, not an atheist; none the less I have a bone to pick with CS Lewis' claim.

Do you believe Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy Pevensie exist? No, they're clearly fictional characters. Does your disbelief in any way demonstrate hatred for them? Of course not!! The claim is totally absurd.

P.S. for those unfamiliar with the fictional writings of CS Lewis, those are the fictional children who get transported to fictional Narnia.

@ElwoodBlues Isn’t CS Lewis dead? He cannot defend his position.
FormerAtheist · 26-30
@SW-User Yes, he died way back in 1963, on the very day President Kennedy was shot (along with Aldous Huxley).
FormerAtheist · 26-30
@ElwoodBlues But that's just it; many atheists (I have to emphasise "many", because I know how they'll react if I don't) will react viciously to some theist simply proclaiming that they believe in God, whether that's in real life or online (although it happens far more often online). It is a grossly disproportionate reaction to something that is basically innocuous; a belief. They respond with anger and insults, mislead with straw-man arguments, and generally carry on like a douchebag.
No one has ever behaved this way when someone has proclaimed their belief, or obsession with, any fictional characters that I know of; it just doesn't happen.
It must be the cognitive dissonance they no doubt struggle with. It must be HELL to think that life is meaningless, there's no free will, that we're nothing more than complex chemistry and electricity, and that when we die that's it.
They're probably frustrated with people who push it on them.

C. S. Lewis is hardly an authority on what other people think.

What atheists like me dislike is the behaviour of some of those who do believe in the existence of deities. Anyway the big religions are all atheists too: as Dawkins said the don't believe in most of the gods either, atheists just go one step further.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
I doubt very much they "hate" God. You can't hate something you don't believe exists.

Thy might dislike religious institutions or individuals trying to bully them into believing in God, though; and some might have turned against religion through having been the victims of such bullies.
Is Jesus a someone? Or is he Jesus?

But I don't think Atheist hate God, but instead I think they hate what they believe is the most successful global scam in the history of known man.

And probably even more hate those that believe the scam and look down on them.
Torsten · 36-40, M
I would say it has more to do with Christians and being overly pushy and shoving their faith on as many as they can
FormerAtheist · 26-30
@Torsten Okay. How do we do that? I ask because where I live, I haven't seen a "pushy Christian" in literally years. They just don't seem to be around much. Maybe it was because of the coronavirus, when so many had to stay indoors for so long.
Torsten · 36-40, M
@FormerAtheist seriously? so many Christians cant help themselves and try forcing their beliefs on everyone. Even happens on this site all the time
FormerAtheist · 26-30
@Torsten Yes, seriously! I don't even get the Jehovah's Witnesses knocking on my door, and I used to really like that because I'd get the chance to debate theology with them.
I’m not an atheist but I don’t believe in these gods. This so called god murdered thousands of people and women are just there for trading with. So I can’t support the idea of that.

It's because they're liars. Something in their life makes them angry at God and they're gonna have to figure out why they're angry and let peace into their hearts. Once they do that, then they can become their true selves and either decide. Yes, I believe. Or i'm open to the idea let me figure it out on my own

@jshm2 The most idiotic thing you’ve said yet. 🙄
@jshm2 what are you smoking?
Thodsis · 51-55, M
I think that hating the God character is maybe justifiable if you have been brought up in an environment where this fictional dictator controls you.

I wasn't brought up in such an environment but I can imagine the hatred felt by those who 'saw the light'...

I'm a Pantheist and I think Jesus was cool
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User He forgave a prostitute knowing that men usually are at the root of why they do that. He turned water into wine at a wedding when they ran out. He turned a few loaves of bread and fishes into enough to feed a huge crowd of people who came to listen to him ,and had baskets of it leftover after everyone had their fill. He wasn’t into materialism and greed, he declared that offspring no longer have to carry the burden of guilt for whatever their ancestors did up to 7 generations back, he opposed the burdensome legalism of the day and simplified the Law by saying number one love God with all your heart, mind and soul and prove it by the way you treat others (feed the hungry, clothe the naked and heal the sick instead of pouring money over to the Pharisees to hoard for themselves) he took up for abused children saying it would be better if the abusers who created a stumbling block for those children to be hung by a rope with a grindstone around their necks and thrown into the sea. Everything was cool that Jesus did in my book. He created a paradigm shift by getting people who followed him to change their way of thinking of things both spiritual and every day life.
I don't hate anyone.
SW-User
That makes no sense
How can they hate what they don't think exists

I used to.be an athiest I never hated anything I didn't believe existed
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Exactly. It. Don’t. Make. Sense. Unless you figure they don’t want Christian to have any power like spiritual strength etc.
ABCDEF7 · M
Agnostics are better, at least to accept that we currently don't know the truth.
novaguy2u · 70-79, M
How can you hate a supposedly entity that doesn't exist?
I just don't believe in power like that.
BigGuy2 · 26-30, M
ALL Laws stem from religious 'Law' - so if these Atheists hate God, it should follow that they hate those religious 'Laws' - so when they get attacked say, they shouldn't be complaining or want that person to be arrested ...

... convoluted logic i admit, but it's still good logic 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️
