I’m not a believer, but I don’t bring up the topic. They always approach me.
I also don’t enter religious forums as a non-believer.
I wish believers offered the same respect, but alas, they don’t . 🥺
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@bijouxbroussard Me too. If they have a post to discuss and celebrate their religion I dont bother them. But when they attack others I will fight
@bijouxbroussard Right. Live and let live. But if someone tries to "fix" my thinking and "teach" me that the Earth is only 6000 years old, then they're gonna hear why I disagree.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@ElwoodBlues oh man some are obsessed with that
Why do theists argue with atheists? After all, it is as much of a fundamental right not to believe in a religion or other belief system as it is a right to believe.

Not all atheists are the same. So why generalise? Live and let live.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
I don't unless their posts are open taunts or challenges.
DocSavage · M
If you’re going to preach to others, you gotta expect a rebuttal.
@DocSavage passion is beautiful when used to help not hurt
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@TryingtoLava Remember what the Bible says about those who have different beliefs = kill them and burn down their towns. So, if a person believes in the Bible why wouldn't he do what it says he is supposed to do?
Sharon · F
@Axeroberts The are plenty of religious groups where you can declare your beliefs in whatever god(s) are relevant to the group. There's no need to pollute Atheist groups withyour nonsense. Christians (especially) don't like it when Atheists post to their groups.
JamesBugman · 56-60, T
It is because both sides have swung fully over. You either believe in it fully (why else would you waste so much of your life praying) or you see that it is all fake BS and those people praying are just wasting their time on this earth. We all end up in the same dirt together.
Thats why i love carazza and ladygrace like it makes them happy why be mean
@NortiusMaximus ffs go whine on your own comment but gtfo off piggying back on mine im just totally over you in general so im blocking you buh bye
@Entwistle sometimes ive been mean and disrespectful to somebody and i bet you have too at some point im done with this comment thread and all the negativity from my original GENTLE comment that came from it
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@TryingtoLava I never said I haven't ever been disrespectful or rude to some people.
Because religious myths have done untold harm to the world and millions of its inhabitants, either by driving individuals or groups to extreme acts, or by preventing people from living their lives to their full potential.

Those of us who are acutely aware of the dangers feel a strong responsibility to try to limit the damage.

That’s why.
@Axeroberts But it doesn’t! Irrationality commands no respect.
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@Adeptlinguist with irrational beliefs like yours it doesn't make sense. And I am pretty sure you are not open to any other ideas so I don't want to waste my time.
@Axeroberts What have I said that is irrational?
I definitely make a distinction between people trying to find fellowship with other Christians and people saying "god is real and this is the proof!".
The former is just people seeking community. The latter is an invitation to debate.

I actually believe that some beliefs are pernicious and should be countered and opposed (and better alternatives offered)

Certain beliefs (for instance an exclusive way that is the only truth, and the belief in the eternal/perpetual conscious torment of any human being) I will continue to argue against.
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@SW-User but who's to say your beliefs are right for everyone.
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@Axeroberts People have worshipped millions of deities through the ages. Which ones don't you believe in?

What the hell is the name of your god? God is just a title; it is not a name.
SW-User
I stay out of people's personal beliefs. It's not my place to question or insult. I've done my own reading, searching and thinking, so have others, so I respect that. I don't feel insulted when people tell me to go to church or pray, because I know to them, that helps and they're being kind.

I see no reason different religions can't get along. We're still people.
DocSavage · M
Depends on who you’re dealing with. There is one user here, for example, who made a claim that he has evidence of the one true god.
This god, is totally independent of any religion or cultural dogma. A creator god, that runs the universe and us.
When questioned on some basic details, he first became evasive. Demanding we take him at his word, which was according to him self evident. Then he became obnoxious and insulting.
I decided to continue pressing for this conclusive evidence, and am still chasing him through over a dozen such post.
I believe you’re entitled to believe what you do , but if you are going to preach, and treat others as ignorant, then you need to show the courage of your convictions.
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@DocSavage i guess that's between you and him
DocSavage · M
@Axeroberts
In his most recent post. He challenged me to tell the difference between facts and truths. Apparently they aren’t the same. Is that what religion teaches people ? That you should ignore reality when it disproves faith.
BlueVeins · 22-25
Mmmm, partly because I think a world where people's beliefs are more grounded in reality tends to be a better world. Partly because back when I used to do that shit, I had some unresolved trauma around religion and arguing against it was very satisfying.
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@BlueVeins i think a lot of people have had some negative experiences with religion
Why do theists think that atheists need to be converted to their faith? Just turning your question the other way round.
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@autumngirl27 some do. It goes both ways. But many are middle of the road and accept others'beliefs
@Axeroberts From my experiences of this group, middle of the road is very rare.
I’ve said on many occasions, I’ve never shown up at anyone’s door suggesting what they should or shouldn’t believe.

I have, however had many turn up at my door with religious doctrine. The existence of missionaries would indicate who generally wants to invade whose space on the subject of religion.

It’s a topic I don’t initiate because I do respect differences.
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@bijouxbroussard i say no thanks. And they are on their way. 🤣
It's always funny to me when I hear atheists or agnostics use the "oh my god" expression.
LuneDeJais24 · 18-21, F
@PrincessVelvet As an atheist, I can't argue that I say it myself. I always funded funny, but I am still respectful with people who believe in god.
PS: should I put a capital "G" for "God", or writing it "god" is fine?)

Go forth.... to bless the many, to bring happiness to the many, out of compassion for the world; go forth for the welfare, the blessing, the happiness of all beings.........Go forth and spread the teaching that is beautiful in the beginning, beautiful in the middle and beautiful in the end.

If we find something fulfilling it is only natural to share it.

Maybe it is how we go about sharing it. Perhaps just being yourself.
Bumbles · 51-55, M
I don’t argue with theists, but not all of them respect atheists.
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@Bumbles yes there needs to be a middle ground to actually learn anything

Because those people that you argue with are the ones who initially try and convince you that you are an amoral degenerate if you don't accept Christ as your Savior (and it is only Christians who are guilty of this).
Hey, if it works for you, knock yourself out.

basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
I'm actually not an atheist myself.
People can follow any or no religion, my problem comes with someone tries to shove it down my throat or turn a country into theocracy.
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@basilfawlty89 well the converts are on both sides. It's just atheists don't come to your door 🤣
You can't be called racist, anti-Semitic, "homophobic", Islamophobic, cetc. if you hate on certain believers
pride49 · 31-35, M
When people shove it in my face. Try to convert me. Or say I'm going to hell for being a fag. Then there's a problem.
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@pride49 if someone told me I was going to hell I would laugh it off. Who cares what those people say it doesn't affect me in any way
